How old do puppies have to be before they can fly long haul? E.g. UK to Australia??

Winston flew at 10 weeks old, but he went in the cabin with his new owners. I wouldn't let a dog of any age go in the hold, just how I feel I'm afraid! :-)

I haven't got much choice, i've got a shih tzu he is 19mths old and he's all booked up ready to go but we've got a shih tzu pup now and she is only about 6 weeks old.  We are emigrating to Australia in August, we weren't going to have another dog but this one was abandond and she is so beautiful. 

So by the time we go she will be 4 months old, do you think this will be ok?  Really don't want to give her to anyone else!!

definitely best to check with the authorities in the receiving state at what age they will allow to fly out, not because of the pup's age but more because of any required vacs before flying.  Despite coming direct from the UK, even young puppies going to Australia still have to do a quarantine period (from memory 12 weeks in the NSW district anyway).

DEFRA can provide good info on most regulations but I know of a few instances where they've got this very wrong!  I'd also ensure when discussing with the Australian authorities that your older dog will meet all requirements and establish the position with it perhaps also doing a quarantine period.

My older dog has got to stay in quarantine for 30 days, he's all booked and his flights are booked.  It's only 30 days for the UK now, luckily.

I will give them a ring just to find out!!

Quarantine is for 30 days entering Australia.  The dogs will fly either directly into Sydney and held there (Eastern Creek I believe the name is) at the quarantine station.
Your local vet should be able to give you some of the information, but a good point of reference for what is involved is this website:

Fairly long winded, but it gives you all the gumph as to what needs to be done.
Your dogs will need to be vet checked to be confirmed 'fit to fly' and one very important thing to remember is the blood tests involved - if the dogs are having their boosters, ask your vet to exclude the leptospirosis part of the jab (only if you're flying out within 6 months of that being done) otherwise lepto will show up in their bloods and may not be given permission to fly.

Yeah my dog is booked into Eastern Creek Quarantine.  We are going through a company called Par Air they are dealing with the Flights and Quarantine for my dog they have also sent us all the info like when the blood tests have to be done which is 3 weeks before he goes and vet checks are 2-3 days before he goes.  There is a lot to sort out but it will be worth it, just need to sort out our pup now.  We are going to be living on he northern beaches of Sydney, we are so excited.  We've been waiting for 13mths for it all to go through!!!

It's mad isn't it?
Still waiting on our visa, but should be within the next couple of months at the latest.  House is on the market, no interest at the mo!!
And two mad Staffordshire bull terriers to sort out to fly to Aus!!!  My girl just had her boosters and vet left out the lepto part so we had better be going within the next 6 months!  (We're hoping to use Overhill kennels)The vet also suggested using Defra and getting a pet passport - in case we want to come back!! Yeah right!!

i took a 12 week puppy to Brazil last year, it was 19 hours!...i was wasted, he came out the crate as bright as a button, only having one tiny wee...............no ill effects, i think he must have slept, which is more than i did!....lol
