Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / had enquiry from europe please give advice
- By Gemini05 Date 06.06.08 15:27 UTC
Hi I have had a new enquiry from an English family that live in Europe that want a puppy from me.

They seem very nice people, we have chatted lots about their situation and why they want a pup etc:
I have never sold a pup to anyone outside the UK, this is only my second litter and I normally place endorsements on all pups including 'not for exportation'
But this family sound great, and do they do still own properties in the UK as well as having family still in the UK.

I have no advise to give them about how to go about exporting the pup from the UK, and feel very concerned about the how things are done etc:

I believe they will need a puppy passport and for the pup to be microchipped before pup can leave the UK?
I have told them I will let them know ASAP, and they would like to come and visit when pup is around 6 weeks old and then collect pup at 10 weeks old.

Can anyone advise on their experiences of this, I feel the family are good protential puppy owners and would like to let them have a pup, but still very concerned about the transportation of the pup at such a young age etc:

If your concerned that much maybe leave it and not export the puppy? There are plenty of breeder in Europe who could suply them with a puppy if they looked hard enough.
I dont think exporting pups is fair and have heard many breeders end up worse off from doing so and the pups have to be an exact weight ready to travel etc, alot of hassle if your not really into it and worried about it?

Hello,
An awful lot depends on where they live. If you would like to pm me I will give you any advice I can.
Jeff.

We've sold a couple of Pom's to Portugal but the people have always come over for them.

They are making the effort to come and view the pup too, which will give you the opportunity to meet them and for them to also view your litter. They don't need to worry with the pup coming from England re: rabies etc, so it is quite simple to export from here to Europe, sure Jeff will have given you the details for what to do there. :-)

The only thing I will say, is yes you have spoken to them on the phone and so are 90% sure they are ideal, but even though they are travelling quite a way to view, treat them the same as any other clients who has come from just around the corner, in that if on meeting them you have reservations don't feel obligated to still sell. I would not take a deposit until you have met them, though you can tell them you will hold one until viewing that way you have not made any sort of contract.

I'm sure that they will be fine, you seem very happy with them on the phone, I would be happier if they came to collect myself too, but carriers are very good either way.

Hi and thanks, xx

The family will be coming over to view the pups, and they will also come back over to collect pup too so that makes me feel a bit easier.

I will be phoning my vets on Monday to find out the procedure of passport and microchipping etc: And then take it from there I think

Hi
I see no wrong in exporting pups worldwide if u can ascertain whom and where the pups are going.  We flew our 2 dogs and cat to New Zealand in 2005 (with us as a family)and brought them back to the UK in 2007.  But we now have a breed of dog which are being bred to send to the far east for meat so I will be putting a restriction "not for exportation" on any puppies that we breed in the future.
But I will say that when i flew my dogs out in 2005 not one person asked to see their kennel club documents, so no-one is actually checking whether these dogs are allowed out of the UK or not.

You can't stop your pups being exported if someone decides to move abroad and take the dog with them. The KC restrictions only stop an export pedigree being issued by the KC, so they can't be registered with a foreign kennel club and progeny registered, shown etc.

Hi there

I exported 3 pups to Europe last year. It was an easy process. All I needed was pet passport, export pedigree and I took them over there myself by ferry. If you need any advice, please feel free to pm me and I can go through the processs with you. Some countries require different vaccinations than others, Holland is the easiest to export to if the pup is under 12 weeks old.

Can anyone tell me the average price to get a puppy passport and microchipped etc to go to a European country that does not require the Rabies jab?

I am waiting for my vet to get back to me about the procedure but just wondered the cost of things, I know prices differ from different vets but just give me what you have paid etc:
thanks xx

Its also worth contacting both Defra and the embassy of the country that pup will be going to as there is conflicting advice given at times
We exported to the Nethrlands and were told by defra that pup need a rabies jab but the Embassy stated she never

All dogs exported from the UK need a Pet Passport, even if they are not coming back. Puppies under 12 weeks going to Netherlands need to be permanently identified(Tattoo or chip @ the moment)& a PP, they do not need any vaccinations-Wukee's brother went to the Netherlands when he was 7 weeks old,(chipped & tattooed BTW)he simply had a PP with his details(chip & tattoo)on it, he had all his vaccinations in the Netherlands after he had been titre tested. he may or may not come back to the UK to compete in Obedience

All European countries will require rabies. If the puppy is not coming back within 6 months they can complete the process abroad - eg rabies vaccs, blood test. If the puppy is 12 weeks + leaving the UK it will need rabies before it goes, the younger they are the easier it is but as Moonmaiden says a lot of the countries vary slightly in their requirements so check first. Vets here would charge for the chip, rabies (around £30) last time I had one done and the passport itself (a bit of a rip-off that one!).

I don't think Winston had a pet passport, he was 10 weeks old when his new owners came over. We had an export pedigree and a fitness to fly certificate, and they had to keep him confined at their property until he was old enough for a rabies vaccine.

All European countries will require rabies.

No, not all countries- if a dog goes straight from the UK to Sweden it does NOT need to be rabies vaccinated -only if it travels via other countries.
- By ponsUK [gb] Date 11.06.08 15:19 UTC
I meant all dogs residing in Europe must have rabies at some stage - don't they require rabies in Sweden at all?
- By Goldmali Date 11.06.08 15:24 UTC
No not at all unless the dog is travelling abroad to countries that are not in Scandinavia and not in the UK.
- By threelabs Date 11.06.08 15:48 UTC
MarianneB, if you, for instance, come to Finland (in Scandinavia :) ) with your dog aged 12+wks of age you need to have him/her vaccinated against rabies prior 21 days of the entry.
