I would just like to have the opinions of more experienced breeders. As I have posted before my girl is huge and is now 57 days (60 days from slip mating) in whelp. The vet scan said she was having an average size litter (which should be 4) however i am not confident that the vet even knew what an average size litter for my breed would be. (that is because he had to ask what pedigree she was !)
This is my query......last night during our evening tummy rub I noticed her umbilical cord area had popped open and she has now a fatty lump. Not a serious hernia as there is not an intestines coming through...just a fatty lump. She was a puppy whos umbilical cord was slow to close. But it did and was not a concern at all. However it must be a weak point now she is so big. Would you take her to the vet to check? My local vets will jump at the chance to giver her a c-section as they will only see ££££££ when I walk in. If I take her on a 30 minute car journey I can see a better vets but this may stress her on a hot day as she is not brill in cars???
I am hoping she will not be too much longer. The only signs I have had are : beige discharge in the last 48hrs, no smell and small amount. swollen vulva in the last 48 hours, no temperature drop yet, although it has dipped, very quiet.
I would appreciate your opinions......thanks

Could you ring the Vets that are 30 mins away for advice if you don't trust your own Vet not to make money out of your concerns?
If it has dipped and gone up again and she is quiet, she could start within 24 hours. Keep your eye on that discharge and talk to your Vet about all of what you said. You are allowed to get another opinion, its you paying the bill.
Can you talk to your dams breeder for sone advice?
What breed is she?

>What breed is she?
As you should know by now Goldenlady she is not allowed to state the breed as that would be advertising ;)
I agree, ring the vets 30 mins away and ask thier advice :)

Sorry I can't help with your problem, I have just bred my first litter, but I hope your girl is OK.
Can I just ask, I know rules are rules, but what difference does it make not stating your breed, as most people have avatars of their dogs and it is blatantly obvious anyway? I know this is not the case here but it has been on a lot of the posts I have read.

Because there are so many people come on here and post only 1 post wth their breed of dog and a question where we can tell outright it is blatent advertiaing which ever way they like to think of it!!!!
As this board does not allow advertising, then it is the easiest way to prevent this. A blanket ban on naming the breed, but only in posts about dogs in Welp, planning a litter or pups on the ground :)
I do know of one post where the breed was allowed as it was relevent to the question about the bitch in the process of giving birth, but that was the only time, and it was very very re;avant as they are difficult welpers :)
Hope that explains it

Thank you, yes it does. It was just something I had wondered since joining. :)
Oops I didn't realise ...Sorry!!
Hope the bitch is OK
Just to let everyone know tht my girly had 6 (not 4) huge puppies on day 59 of her whelp. The average weight for our breed is 3 to 4 oz. Mine where 2 @6oz and 4 @ 7oz. (2boys and 4 girls). All puppies are doing well and are 8 days old. They now weigh a staggering 14 to 15 Oz. Huge effort on mums part...shes incredile.
Umbilical lump has gone and all is well.
Thank you everyone for advice and help....
