Topic Dog Boards / Health / Kennel cough, which type of Benylin??
- By belgian bonkers Date 02.06.08 18:45 UTC
Poor Sasha Staffy started coughing through the night last night.  Nasty bout of kennel cough.  I went to the chemist to get childrens Benylin, but there are 2 different types.  One is for chesty cough and other for tickly cough.  Both have different ingredients.  Which type do I use?

Many thanks,
Sarah

I used normal benylin (adult) but for chesty coughs as my bitch was coughing up snotty stuff :-O

It's the old fashioned one, that was first out.
The one that can make you drowsy, the adult variety.

Cheers guys.  I thought it should be the childrens one as she's so little.

I always ask for red benylin and once made the mistake of saying it was for the dog and the woman wouldn't sell it to me so I had to go to another shop.

wow I never knew you could use human cough mixture, do you administer it with a syringe?

Does it treat the cough or just make them more comfortable?

I use a syringe and squeeze it down her throat.  She always pulls faces as she doesn't like the taste but gets a biscuit after.  I'm not sure how it works but it appears to treat mild doses of KC, I haven't used AB's for it since discovering benylin.

Hi Sarah,

I used baby Tixylix (sp) on my puppy recently and it worked a treat - he liked the blackcurrant flavour and lapped it off a saucer :)  Hope Sasha is feeling better soon.

That works really well Teri, I'm impressed!  I used a syringe just incase she didn't like it, but she took it like a baby with a bottle.  She's not been a happy bunny, though is still eating and drinking OK.  I'm just waiting for the other 4 to get it!!  The joys of multiple dog households.

Cheers,
Sarah.

Try the Tixylix next time cheekychow, it seems to work great and Sash loves the stuff!

Great stuff :)  Hopefully your others will be less affected or maybe not at all - my two adults showed no signs and the puppy was the one bringing it home in the first place from dog club (selfish #### taking an infected dog to classes  )  The medicine worked a treat it was just trying to keep him calm and quiet which proved an issue (he doesn't do calm LOL)

Fingers crossed!

Thats really helpful guys thank -you. I must admit to storing all these tips up in case I need them (and passing them on to my other doggie friends) :-)

My dog had horrendous kennel cough and I had no benylin.  Phoned emergency vet at 3am (popular, not)  but it was very very bad.  Quarter of a co-dydramol tablet the vet recommended (I had it in my cupboard).  Sorted.  I would say probably check with a vet before doing this but it worked for copper.

Luckily she's feeling a lot better now.  Just the odd cough every now and again.  Amazingly no-one else seems to be affected by it and am keeping fingers crossed that it stays that way!
