Topic Dog Boards / Health / distended abdomen

I came in today and started to feed the brood but one of my girls didn't join the gang. I thought nothing much of it but when I offered her the bowl, she turned her nose up at it, not like her. I decided to have a feel of her tum and found that she is very hard and seems distended. I have an appointment to see the vet but wondered if anyone had come across this before. She did eventually take most of her tea and is lying at peace but she is still quite hard.

Thanls

Yes, the abdomen is often hard when the dog is in pain, but it can be a sign of bloat particularly when the hard is combined with distension so I hope your appointment is sooner rather than later.

Thanks. When I phoned the vet I described her symptoms and said that I was concerned but the nurse seemed unconcerned and said to bring her in at 6.00. I am very anxious although she is lying sleeping at the back door peacefully.

If you are that worried, kick up a bit of a fuss . Have they another branch they can see you sooner at?
When puppy boy broke his leg Friday, they said bring him in at 9.30 am- this was at 8.15! I said what? ( or words to that effect :) )....They sent us to their other branch straight away.

Lets hope everything is ok, must say the cases of bloat I have seen the dog concerned is restless so it may just have been a touch of colic.

Thank you. I am going to put her in the car now and turn up early. The only reason I have held off is because she is so settled and I was sure that if it was bloat she would have been very restless.

Any news ?

Hi.  The vet says that it is not bloat. She (Tammy) is very tense and her temp is 103.9. She was given an injection of Buscopan, Rymadyl and antibiotic. He wants to see her first thing tomorrow. She seems happy enough but is not interested in eating and is very thirsty. I won't offer her any food until after her check up in the morning.

Thanks for asking after her.

Pleased to hear it is not bloat and I am always somewhat relieved when the temperature is raised as at least there is a reason, infection, that is causing the problem. You could liquidise some chicken, chicken liquid and water and see if she can manage to lap that.

Thanks. I hhad boiled up a chicken last night to add the stock to their meal today so I will try her on that and see if she takes it maybe before I take her to the vet.

Don't want to alarm you but did the vet mention pyometra? Excess thirst, swollen tum, lack of appetitite - all symptoms.
Hope she's ok :0)

Hi,

She is in season just now and he checked her discharge last night as she has always been a funny girl for seasons.

Her temp was down to 102.3 this morning and she ate her breakfast and her tea tonight.

She was given a couple of more injectons but I am keeping a close eye on her.

Thanks very much.

Given the correct ABs the condition seems to improve within 24 hours, so good news, seems she is on the mend.
