Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Could she be starting?

Pippa is 55 days today from mating.
She refused her breakfast then about half an hour ago lost about a teacup full of fluid. Would this just be due to pressure on her bladder?
Her temp is 37.4.
I am really scared something will go wrong as it is a bit early and we have had a bad time recently so expecting more bad luck.
Any comforting words will be much appreciated.

Not a breeder so don't really know, but.. Did the fluid look/smell like urine?
If not I would be on the phone to the vet for advice. Hope all is well.

Is she restless and scratching at her bedding. It's not unusual for bitches to go off their food when heavily pregnant. I often have a job to get my bitches to eat for the last week of their pregnancy. Cocopop has made a very sensible suggestion about the fluid. If it was urine then thats fine, the pressure of the pups on her bladder will sometimes cause these 'surprise pees', but if it was amniotic fluid, or it was slightly thicker than urine, or any other colour but clear or pee coloured, then I would make the vet aware and keep a close eye on her. Look out for heavy panting, whining, bed scratching and restlessness. Also, when you let her outside, don't let her out of your sight. Manys the time I've had to dive into the shrubbery and bring out a bitch who has decided she wants to have her puppies in a hole in the ground. Bitches can sometimes get very anxious for several days before they whelp. We think a nice cosy whelping box in the house is the perfect place to have puppies, bitches think a nice dark secluded place away from predators would be better, so they can alarm you by pacing about distractedly and constantly trying to get into the garden. Good luck, and let us know how you get on.

The temp tends to be a little lower in the morning. It is very unlikely she would go this early.  She probably had a widdle.

Thanks for the support, help and advice.
Rang my vet and he wanted to have a look so just got back. her cervix is closed so he isn't worried, just told me to keep an eye on her temp.
I thought it was probably wee but it didn't smell.
Vet could feel pups moving and said as there looks to be a fair number she could easily go a week early.
She has been scratching at some newspaper but not much really and she still wants to play with her ball!
Will keep you posted, thanks again.

In my experience  The temp always seems to be a little lower in the morning.  WHen the " drop" happens it will be prolonged ie 12 hours ish
