Topic Dog Boards / Health / My boy is sick and I'm worried

He's not eaten much all week and what he has eaten he has thrown up. He usually loves his food. Took him to the vet who said he has no tenderness, no temperature, his breathing is fine, his gums are nice and pink. He's been given an injection of antibiotics and an injection to stop him being sick but I'm worried sick still. He's not allowed food for 24 hrs and then I am to feed him small meals of chicken for two days.

He's just lying there now not himself at all. He's all sleepy. Not interested in anything. I'm worried because I couldn't see my usual vet as there was only this one vet there today. He's never seen my dog before so I tried explaining how he wasn't himself at all and he wasn't bothered. To top it all this is the vet that saw our cat when he was sick and wouldn't eat and he said the cat was fine but it turned out he wasn't and he had to be pts the next week. I'm worried my ben will go the same way.

Has anyone else had a dog with a bug lingering on like this? Benny has had bugs before but always still eaten his food and they've always cleared up after a few days and 24 hrs starvation. I'm just worried that it's something more seroius

iv never had this problem before, read your post and i would say, (being a parranoid person anyway) get a second oppinion soon as, in the meantime lots of hugs and kisses, and special treatment, have you tried some pasta?

The anti emetic may have made him sleepy, some do. Was he lethargic before you visited the vets or has this come on since the injections?

He was a bit depressed and sad but not so much now it's worse. Plus he would eat chicken if I gave him it and he'd shove it down but now after 24hrs starvation he won't even eat chicken or anything he usually loves. I'm worried sick. He burped after having water and he had some white foamy stuff around his mouth.

Think it may be the medication that has made him even quieter, but if he were mine I would be taking him to another vet for another opinion, if a dog is that down I would want a name for what is wrong otherwise one suspects that the vet either does not know or does not care and Sunday or not I would be doing it to day.

I don't want to worry you but I had a girl with similar symptoms and the vet couldn't find anything wrong. They took blood from her as I insisted that she was "not right" and her white blood cell count was very high. The vet opened her up to be safe and found a sock in her intestines. This could not be palpated since it was soft but was making her very ill.

It may just be the medication but I would agree with those who have advised you to have the vet, or a different one, go over him again.

Hope he improves very soon.

My sisters Boxer is just like this, she often gets a bad belly from eating the simplest of things like a different flavoured dog treat. She is normally a typical Boxer, all play, play, play & on the go, but every now and then she will  hardly get out of her bed and she refuse to eat for a couple of days and she'll be sick. She has been taken to the vets several times but they say she just has a sensetive stomach and my sister is starting to find what the triggers are now.
The white froth is probably due to her having an emty stomach, but personally, I would go back to my own vet, just to make sure.
I hope he's feeling better soon :)

I just rushed him up to the emergency vet. Since he went to the vet yesterday he's turned yellow on his belly and eyes and gums. They are running blood tests now. I'm worried sick

How is your boy doing?

Well he's back at my usual vet now and they've done x rays and they show no growths or anything. Hi white blood cells aren't good. My vet thinks it's definately a primary liver problem but he isn't sure what the problem is at the moment. He thinks it looks like poison. But as my other dog is fine and my boy can't have come into contact with poison he thinks then maybe it's an infection.

He's still in a very bad way and I've been told straight he may not pull through and this is gonna take a long time to clear up if it does. I have to take him to the vet daily to have antibiotic injection and injection to stop him being sick. And they check his temp and make sure he isn't dehydrated.

He's just not eating at the moment and the vet said that it's important to get his strength up. I did manage to get him to eat three meals of chicken yesterday though and he held it down. But today he won't eat. I've come on here to look for advice on what kinds of food a sick dog will eat.

If he's jaundiced, poached white fish and chicken breast with the skin removed will help tempt him without making him feel too ill until you know what's causing it.  Any fat is likely to make him feel sicky as he won't be able to deal with it very well at the moment ;)  Add some well cooked rice if he'll take it.  Small amounts, but a few meals a day may help.

Hope you find out what's causing it soon.

{{{BIG HUGS}}} to you and your boy.

Jo,

Has your little pup been checked to eliminate Megoesophagus or pyloric stenosis?  Just a precaution ;)
