my fault have let claws get a bit long So how often would anyone advise to clip them to get them back to norm once a week or less ? or more dont want to make him sore or lame

I'd invest in a dremmel or nail grinder welshie and do the nails (briefly - lengthy contact causes over heating) every other day.  The quick recedes rapidly with this method so even nails which are verging on talons can be tamed and wont cause any pain, discomfort or lameness to the dog :)
