Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / To neuter or not?

Hi guys

I posted some time ago regarding my GSD attacking my Leo pup, and am pleased to report there have been no further incidents, and they're now good friends!

However, having recieved such good advice the first time round I'd like your thoughts on another matter.  Many people have suggested I use my Leo as a stud dog, he's a beautiful looking dog, with an excellent temperament, and good pedigree, but I have no experience in this area.  It's not a decision I would make lightly, and would appreciate it if you could tell me the pros and cons of doing so?

On the opposite side of the coin, should I decide to neuter, will this affect the newly restored relationship between him and my GSD (I've been told neutered males smell like females?).

I look forward to your comments

Firstly do you show or work your dog ? Are you going to do the full gambit of health tests televant to the breed ?  how many owners of Leo bitches do you know whose bitches pedigree compliments your dog ?

Having a stud dog is not as easy as most people think, the bigger the dog the more people you need at a mating, last time I helped a friend mate her newfie bitch it took four of us as they both decided to go to sleep whilst tied !! & the dog who didn't get many bitches was like a bull in a china shop !

don't forget that as a stud dog owner you are morally just as responsible for any litters he produces as the owners of the bitches are

It could well affect his relationship with your other male

First and foremost, are the "many people" actually ones who know the breed? Before thinking of using him at stud he needs to be assessed by people who are aware of what a really good specimen is - there are lots of good looking dogs in all breeds, but it is the breed attributes that need to be considered.

The answer to the above it that it may well be that it will damage the relationship and that the castrated one could well smell like an in season bitch, not a positive but a strong possibility.

I would never advise the castration of a dog except for medical reasons, there would seem little point in taking this irreversible step if you have no problems.
