has broken his leg in 3 places. He had a GA today for his x-rays and it shows 3 breaks above his elbow. He has his op tomorrow at 9 am. The vet is a worried about nerve damage and his growth plates and is hoping that he has more or less finished growing - I don't think he has yet. We had to take him to Roehampton to a vet that does 'tricky bones' - Richard Bleckman. anyone heard of him?

My poor baby, he missed his footing on the backdoor step - I just keep crying. Theyve said they might keep him til monday. I'm just so worried about the GA again with his breed and also his paw.

Hi killickchick
I am so sorry to hear about your pup. I just wanted to tell you about my experience, hopefully it will reassure you a little. I have a yorkie bitch who at 3 months old broke her leg. She was seen by an orthapedic vet in Solihull. The vet was worried about her growth plates too. She had a Salter Harris fracture, they are graded 1-5, 1 being the least serious and 5 the worst. Tiegans was a 4. Apparently her break was the opposite side of her elbow to where usually breaks and her bones were so tiny they were concerned about how or if they would manage to pin it. When they operated the surgeon said her growth plate fell away. They inserted 3 pins into her leg and when they x rayed her they put a 5p coin next to her to show me how tiny it all was. There were still concerns as to whether she would keep full use of the leg. She had cage rest for a number of weeks and her excercise had to be increased gradually. They also showed me some physio that I did daily. We had booked a holiday to Wales taking the dogs with us and I believe that it was this holiday that helped her enormously. We allowed her to walk a little and then carried her. As we were out and about every day she got lots of little and often excerise and this along with the physio helped to build up her muscles and give her lots of movement in her leg. A year later one of the pins moved and she had to have it taken out (which seemed more painful for her than when they repaired the fracture). Any way what I wanted to say was that she coped brilliantly, she was an angel and she has made a fantastic recovery. It is an awful time and my heart goes out to you. I will be thinking about you and your baby .

Thank you everyone for your kind thoughts. Just want him home...its far too quiet without his snoring!

Will ask the vet what sort of fracture it is - from the xrays there were2 fractures around his joint and 1 break slightly above. The vet said although a more complicated to operate on break, it was quite common in puppies. Have so much to ask the vet, will make a list I think.

Thank you jane, thats what I need to hear :) and yes it is so awful, waiting, worrying, missing him. I actually wish I could have stayed with him so he would have something familliar. It wasn't til we were home that we even thought that we could have taken his blankie or one of my tshirts for him :(

Ahh hope he's OK.

My girl who I let someone have last year has broken her toe yesterday and is now in plaster.  I know not as severe as yours.  She's already had get well cards from the soldiers etc. and is doing well on the sympathy vote.

Hope all goes well.  One of our Pom's did this a number of years ago it took quite a while to heal but he did well afterwards.

Louis has had his op, took 2 and a half hours! His joint was badly damaged but the vet said he managed to do a nice tight fit. They will keep him all weekend and we can pick him up on Monday when the vet will run through his aftercare.. Can't wait to bring our baby home.

Poloaussi, he is 7 months. Gonna be hard to keep him quiet after he feels better in himself. He is usually a little loony :)

Sorry to hear about poor Louis :-(. praying for his leg to heal quick as it can - hope he takes okay to his 'box rest'. Glad the op went well.

sorry to hear about your pup's accident :(

I know how difficult it is to enforce rest on a young dog, my Bea slipped in the garden when she was about 5 months old, and broke her shoulder....luckily no op needed etc, but trying to get her to rest was a nightmare, she's always been a very active dog, we tried sedating and everything (on the advice of the vet) but luckily the fracture healed....

sending best wishes and healing thoughts to you and your boy

aww the poor thing! he just slipped? its always the stupid little accidents that seem to do most harm isn't it? hope he mends ok.
- By killickchick Date 01.06.08 16:10 UTC
Hi Astarte, yeah, he was going into the kitchen from the garden and his foot just slipped off the step - his whole weight fell onto the front of his elbow and smash! His crying was terrible to hear :( But , not long to go now. Hubby will get home from work 7 am, have a cup of tea, then we'll set off to get him :) Have found a close by hydrotherapy pool for when he's ready - wonder what he'll make of the lifejackets LOL luckily he loves a bath so that will help!!

> its always the stupid little accidents that seem to do most harm

Been reading up on his y fracture and it is usually always minor trauma that causes the break in puppies

Can't wait to snog him :) :)

aww, big hugs tomorrow i think. hope the hydro therapy is fun!

Poor little thing, roll on tomorrow when he comes home, probably he will still be on pain killers which may sedate him a little too. It is going to be hard to hold him back though.

Its really diffecult Jake had OCD in his right shoulder aged about 7 months and we were told to keep him still!!! hes a border and then lead walking for 12 weeks. It was purgatory but he's all mended now so its worth the wait, poor pup and poor you. Best wishes...XXX

Louis is home now :) It really is hard to keep him calm and to walk not run. He is very wobbly and has an awful limp which should, over the coming weeks get much better. We don't have to crate him but find it a lot easier putting him in his pen when we need a break from continually watching him. In fact he is snoring his head off now ( then again, so is OH ;) ) Louis' arm looks a little like frankenstein but as soon as the stitches are out he can start hydrotherapy - really looking forward to that. Vet has advised lead walking little and often - just gonna stay in the garden for now though.
He does seem to have a sore throat, more noticeable when he swallows gonna try him with an ice lolly. Any other suggestions? Hope he hasn't picked anything up from the vets :(
- By Astarte Date 02.06.08 20:18 UTC
might have been from the oxygen etc? glad he's home!

So sorry to hear of his accident. The sore throat is probably due to the tube down his throat during the op and will be fine in a couple of days.
My huge GSD Tzar (Gone to the bridge 15 years ago! God bless him) badly broke his upper arm...well shattered it to be precise! had a three hour op and lots of pins and plates. Came home from the vets on Morphine for the pain and into a small fenced off area. He was dopey for the first day due to the anesthetic then the following day jumped over the 4ft high fence and cracked a plate!!! had his second op to repair the damage and came home with NO pain relief!! he then treated his injury with a little more respect but even so was up and about on short lead walks within a couple of days and we had another 6 years with him. The vet came down from Edinborough to do his op, a specialist who luckily for us was visiting the vets to do a tricky op on a very expencive horse they had in. He put five large pieces together with pins and plates and washed aprox 30 small splinters out. Tzar went on to live a very happy if a little odd in his movement! life and the only thing he ever missed out on was competing in obedience, it was his rt fore leg and he used to swing it out to the side after the op and couln't get in close enough to me to compete any more?
Good luck with the recovery I am sure he will be fine.
Hugs and licks from the girlies
PS the op cost best part of £1500.00 all those years ago...thank the Lord for insurance!!!
Aileen
He did it running down the beach and launching himself into the sea, must have trapped it between two rocks and twisted and shattered it...ouch!!
