Topic Dog Boards / Health / Cutting claws

Since my GSD boy had an infection in his pads, he's been VERY reluctant to let me near enough to his paws to let me cut his claws, so they got quite long, despite me increasing the road walks.  Anyway, after lots of treats and praise he will now let me cut them, hurrayyyy.  However, I want to cut them little and often to get them back to their proper length, but obviously, I don't want to put him off again by accidentally cutting into the quick.

So the question is - how often should I cut them, giving the quick enough time to recede between trims?

Thanks in advance

I reckon once a week, what do others think?

Yep, that sounds right to me too.

If he will let you try a dremel on him, you can do this gradually over the weeks and have his claws well back in no time. I think if you do a search on Dremel on here there is a thread but I am useless at finding them.

Thanks Floradora, but I've already tried that!!!  He won't let me near him the little b*gger!!  I was worried about how much pressure to put on him as well.  It's taken me so long to get to the point where he'll let me near him with the clippers I don't want to do anything to set us back again.

I know how you feel, one of my girls is convinced I am going to kill her when I do her nails, totally ott, I have cut her nails since she was a day old and have never cut too short so I am not sure what her problem is. Strange these dogs aren't they? Anyway good luck with your boy
