hi i have 8 puppies and i desperatly need kc name ideas lol i need to think of 2 names per puppy using upto 24 letters per name and i really dont know where to start, i can pay kennel club if need be but im at the mercy of their sometimes ridiculous naming service lol
Puppies are
any ideas would be greatly appreciated thanks

when i chose names for my litter i chose names from a list of cocktails. i.e. Jack Hammer black for one of the boys with my affix in front and Jamaica Breeze for one of the girls.
So you could look up something similar for your pups.
Some of the names are really good.
You could choose song titles, films, anything along those lines and if you google your idea they will give you a long list to chose from. In your case maybe something like japanese flower names, or trees.............
Hope this helps.

I would never allow the KC to choose names, ti is one of the best parts of having a litter and a lot of thought and pride goes into choosing the names, after all they may become great and influential dogs in pedigrees of dogs yet to come.
I likie to go with the same letter of the alphabet for the pups in a particular litter as it makes it easy to know which pusp came from which litter and comparing pedigrees it is easier to see if dogs are littermates etc.
Other people choose a theme and soem combine both methods.

Pick a theme and go with that.
Our pups are all Mr Men & Little Miss - for example we have a Mr Cool and a Little Miss Magic
In the future when Ruby Tuesday has hers, they will all be names of Rolling Stones songs - like their Mum.
We had so much fun coming up with different ideas for the names of our pups!
any ideas for sbt names anyone really struggling

pick something your interested in and go with that, i've known litters named after whiskeys, a certain bands songs etc.

Claire....ashleigh...
Go with themes.....music..pop artists ...tv programmes... soap characters...I know somebody whose theme is differing fabrics, the only thing to choose is your theme and you will be away with loads of names.
Karen ;)

i have the same and mine are all from the loin king, most of the cast names have swahelian meanings too so i combined the both, what about singers of bands, orfamous people eg, (actors, singers,) there is lots of ideas it does take a long time and lots of trial and error, write them on paper first, if you have too m any letters then narrow it down,
>the loin king,
What a great name for a stud dog!!! :-D :-D
Come on claire, :-)
The names you choose are a reflection of you the breeder, you can't have others choosing the names for you.
Just think of a theme or something of importance to you, a time in your life, a perfect holiday, food you like, interests, music and songs, wildlife plants or animals, seasons, anything in life that makes an impression on you, if you think about it you will soon have more names than puppies, nothing is too silly or too serious, you can even name the pups after important people in your life with a little tweaking. :-)
This is your chance to imortalise the pups with names that mean something to you, their breeder. :-)

Someone I know gets the racing post and names her pups after racehorses. My litter was named using the music of the 'Eagles'.
Angela
I love choosing puppy names and often start choosing them a year before i mate my bitch! My first litter all had names with moon in and my 2nd were all fireworks as they were due 5th nov. My 3rd litter, planned for later this year are currently an american theme but may be changed to musicals. This is the problem with choosing so far i advance, i change my theme probably 5 times before the pups arrive!LOL!
Let us know what theme you choose and maybe we will be able to give some ideas!
mel.

I really like choosing their names too although mine all originate from Shakespeare so the theme is decided, it's just what letter I chose to name them all with. Breeder of one of my cats, looks for any significant anniversary relating to the day the kittens were born eg. Hope (My cat) was born on 9/11 and so all the litter were given relevant names hence Hope. Her latest litters are all stars but 'star' in other languages eg. Aster, Sirius, Danika, Hoshi, Estelle & Roxanne, the other litter are all connected to Fire eg. Kimba, Candie, Maui, Aiden.

rofl!

We might mate one of our bitches next year and are already thinking of names!

It`s fun naming litters I have a different theme each time ,my litter 4 years ago I named after The Lisbon Lions(Celtic 1967 European Cup Winning team) with a little tinkering for the girls. Next litter Irish ,lost myself and KC too in that one they mixed up the sexes and I had to go through it again ,hope I got it right hehe and last litter mix of Irish and Scottish.Next litter what ever my sleepdeprived mind thinks up.

my first litter were snow some thing as they were been born it was snowing and it was the last snow of the century 1999
second litter after native indians
the only one puppy was limted edition.
the first litter of spainsh were after the bull sign in may and they were born may to, which was good has they were swd puppies and of cause in spain they have bull flights,
the second litter of swd where name after tails as they were one of the first litter to keep they tails beacuse of the docking bann.

We too plan ahead, we actually have a book which is full of names! Dances - Salsa, Lambarda etc. Weather - Tornado, Monsoon etc. Then of course you could go with the same letter as your affix, if affix begins with P for example then the names also begin with P, Patience, Prediction etc. I love thinking of names, it's part of the fun of planning a litter.

I name my litters after native indians like Cheyenne rose, apache moonbeam, so i know all my pups kc names.I start thinking of names months before the due date.

My first ever litter (Burmese kittens) were named for the different winds as they were really fast and flighty :) Ethereal Zephyr was my favourite, tho when the vet called out his name the whole room turned to look. Vet said he's always wanted to do that! :-D
My first puppy litter were named after novels by Terry Pratchett :-D and we had some lovely names there!
My last litter were named after eclipses as their mothers pet name is linked to the moon!
Possibly the MOST fun about a litter is giving them lovely interesting names - apart from watching them grow and cuddling them! :-D
Definately pick a theme and the names wil be easy after that :-)

I tend to name by theme.
The last two litters have been Charles Dickins characters (we're in Portsmouth) so there were Oliver Twist (naturally for the only boy!), Little Nell, Estella and Rosa Bud.
The other one was to do with talking. So there were Rumour Has It, Talk Of The Town, Hot Gossip, Tittletattle, Hearsay and Careless Whisper.
The upcoming one is yet to be decided, though like most breeders I've been planning names for ages and have several lists!
Pick a selection from favourite authors book titles/characters, films your favourite actor/actress has been in, something to do with the history of your area, favourite flowers etc etc Anything that you love the idea of!
Its great fun! :-D

Yes I am sad I have bits of paper in my Polish dictionary listing pronounceable (for the English speakers) Polish words in the letter of the alphabet I am going with.
I tend to like words that express a positive quality, or something suitable for a hunting dog, referring to guns or nature. Fro example one is called Kaiber (calibre) which of course relates to bullets.
The reason I choose Polish words is that I am Polish by descent and I am less likely to have names refused. I could have gone Norwegian, but then it is really embarrassing when you get the tenses ans sexes wrong. there are a few Polish Lowlands with Polish names that aren't right, and I would hate to do that.

My one and only litter were named after Mushrooms, I never relised how many lovely names mushrooms had. It was appropriate as my affix is after a local wood.

the lion king lol !!!!!!

When thinking of names, for me, it depends on the dog. I mean, I have names for a spirited soul, and ones for pups that are more laid back.
I know a person who looks at who the dam and sire were, and then makes a new name out of their registered names. I can give an example (I hope its allowed as an example!)
Father FLash
Dam Casino
Puppy: Flashie Casie (thats my girl - Casie)
I have a list, and I like to have call names come directly from the registered names. For example:
Affix's Tiny Tim, call name Tim. I dont know, totally random (as I kinda like to keep my names under wraps, as since they arent taken yet, I dont want them to be when I get a pup to suit it! SRY)

But if you have your own ffix you can surely use a name that is already in use by another affix.e.g AffixA Flashie Casie & AffixB Flashie Casie same names different affixes? or can you not do this?
Angela

I am not really sure if that is allowed with the CKC. Names have been turned down before, ones that havent been used with that particular kennel name. So I am guessing, although its never happened to me, that a different affix but same name is still the same thing.
We also have rules about what kind of names can be used or not. For example, I know one guy who wanted to name his dog Affix Princess Diana. He couldnt, it was not allowed because it was a famous, royalty name. Not sure, if it was because it was because of royality, or just because it was famous, but I think he ended up with Affix Princess D (since even though you know who he is refering to, it doesnt actually have the name Diana.)
last summer I chose names based on Led Zeppellin tracks, I had a lot of fun choosing them!!
Other ideas could be based on flowers, herbs, precious stones ie Black Diamond, Pink Saphire etc
saints, angels, deities.....
a lot depends on breed as well, the names I chose suited well last year, the biggest pup was called Moby Dick !! (it was actually second name choice, my first being Kashmir was refused by KC) and his family call him Moby, which is nice
If you need any further help just PM me, I could go on and on with sugestions (yawn) :)

i used the names of different blossoms,
eg sherri blossom
almond blossom
cherry blossom
as the pups mums name is blossom and the names went well with my affix

we used names of winds last year for our puppies ..... we lost the roof to our kennels thro high winds the day before Madge whelped and it just seemed appropriate ...lol..... and not to worry she was not in there at the time safely tucked up indoors
The breeder of my dog used weather names as it was blowing a storm when he was born. I have Whistler in the wind another was Storm in the Wind, Rain in the Wind etc... all nine of them.
So Whistler he is!!

> But if you have your own ffix you can surely use a name that is already in use by another affix
Yes Angela you can. My first choice for the boy I was keeping earlier this year, was not accepted. I was disappointed, but my 2nd choice went ahead. It was XXXX (my affix) Bobby Dazzler. I have since been told that there is another boy out there with the same name (different affix), but exactly the same breed! Have to say that I was surprised. I do admit that I enjoy choosing my own names for my litters. I bought a girl last year, and the breeder asked me what to call her, before she sent in her Litter Registration. She was born end of October, and I called her Pumpkin Pie. The breeder really didn't like it, but I just thought "Halloween" and that was it!

i named my very first litter of pups after greek gods and goddess as i was amazed that i had actually produced a healthy litter. after that my other litters of puppies are named after the childrens programmes that my grandson is into at the time. i have had a litter of Tweenies and a litter of Thomas the Tank engines. my grandson plays with the puppies so does his fair share of socialising them so its a little memento to him. he is 4 years old now. i have a litter due soon so these will be named after Power Rangers!!! I agree though affixes are really difficult to think of. But mine was strange I thought for weeks trying anagrams of family members and alsorts but suddenly one day it just came to me when i wasnt thinking about it. I think I was thinking to hard.

Personally, being a complete optimist, I choose a name I like and the imagine that name with the word 'Champion' in front of it.
going off on a slight tangent from the original post. Does anyone when applying for an affix if you have to put down 6 possibles. I have 3, thought out so far but an struggling to come up with the last 3!
By Dill
Date 03.06.08 10:06 UTC
I had HUGE problems deciding on an affix :( Over a year I went through so many names but didn't really like any of them :( I wanted something relevant to the breed and my dogs, and anagrams of names were useless :(
I had one or two that were sort of OK so while at Crufts just before our first litter I went to the KC stand to ask a few questions about affixes and if we really needed 6 names. While talking to the staff, who were fantastic, the perfect name just popped into my head,
completely out of the blue! - a real 'lightbulb' moment! I hadn't even thought in that direction

The woman I was talking to checked it on her computer and it was OK! I paid then and there and came away from Crufts that year with my Affix!

(obviously subject to no objections ;) )
If you're really struggling for the last 3 but have a name you really like, why not phone the KC registration staff, they can check while you wait and it
may save you racking your brain for the last 3 names ;) Nothing ventured, nothing gained ;) :)
Thanks Dill
Will do that as I have one that I really like and also has sentimental value. I've googled it and dont find any trace of it on the internet at all - so fingers crossed!
Jill

Jill we only put three down and got our second choice - which actually like better now!
Good luck my dear!
Sometimes it might be 'like' something e.g. Rackensett like Ravensett, Jemsett like Gemsett!
Let me know what you get :)
