What are you wanting to work out ? MTG ?

How to work it out is fill you car right to the brim, dont do the half tank etc. Right to the brim. Run it for a couple hundred miles and fill right to the top again. Work out the volume usage IE Litres/gallon  to work out you MPG.  It is advices to do it a couple of times if you want to get it pretty accurate as different journeys of course can affect consumption.

Based on your figure of 100 miles costing you £27.

Off the top of my head £1.27 a litre  on the above 100 miles means you car is only doing 21-22 miles to the gallon. What car do you drive?

You original questions/statement doesn't make 100% sense to me :-)    if you did 120 miles on the above £27 based on £1.27 a litre you car would be dong 25.5 MPG.

As I said earlier you need to do the whole excerise properly to work it out more accurately. :-)

Ok your post is titled  "work it out" so I thought you were doing that :-D

You have worked it out slightly incorrectly I personally think.

Diesel goes so much further doesn't it - so glad we have now both got diesel cars!!!  Must shop around for where I buy though - some are charging £132 / litre and if you go a few extra miles £125.9/litre!

Diesel goes so much further doesn't it

Well this can also be debated now and when buying a car you have to be a tad clever or be good at comparisons.

With Diesel at about 15p per litre more that unleaded this now has to be taken into the considerations, multipled but the annual mileage someone does and the type of car and its natural fuel consumption.  15p per litre less is  67.5p per gallon.  So if you don't do a lot of mileage and you car is a reasonably small engine the unleaded petrol with be the better option.   The mid sized cars need also consideration as the difference in purchase price from the petrol to the diesel  also has to be considered. :-)

Very confusing for the buyer today :-)

I have a diesel estate which I use for the dogs does appox 45 miles to the gallon.

I have a little Aygo that does 50 Miles to the gallon unleaded.  It wasnt worth me buying the diesel one as the car wasn't expensive new and the saving could never be recovered with diesel.

Hi Blue - you are right you need to check your figures!  But my Sabaru drank petrol like nobodies business and I wouldn't like to even think how little mpg she did!  and OH had an Explorer which also was very thirsty for us - its super - and around town the diesel's aren't as efficient as on the motorways/long journeys fab!!!  but vs the Subaru/Explorer both loads better!

Hi Briedog

I think your figures are a bit out.  I make it:

£55 divided by 240 miles is approximately 23p mile.

So 10 miles is about £2.30

That's if you've done completely full tank to completely full tank and the figures are approximate because I haven't got a calculator and my brain's on holiday :)
- By Blue Date 27.05.08 11:45 UTC
You wouldn't like to be running they pair just now for sure :-D

I think it is incredible how much it has risen. Mr Brown needs to step in and throw his weight around ( if he knows how) :-D

I do approx 25K now per year so it is pricy..
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 27.05.08 12:03 UTC
I don't think diesel is any better these days.  It's 10ppl dearer than unleaded etc. so nope to me it seems more expensive.  I regret buying a diesel vehicle now!

My dad had an L200 4Life it was really expensive when fuel was an awful lot cheaper..
He got a Peaugeot diesel estate and is even considering changing that to a small petrol car now!

I still have my diesel astra estate and won't be swapping her yet.
My car tax will go down to £30 next year..from £120 this year :)
Although I'm sure that they will find somewhere else to get the revenue that they are losing from
the car tax.

Just won't be doing as many dog shows etc.
- By rachelsetters Date 27.05.08 12:30 UTC
Although more expensive in cost for us Dianne the diesel's we have now give better mpg! than our petrol cars ever would!
- By Harley Date 27.05.08 22:26 UTC
My last car was a diesel and current one is petrol. Last car was much better on fuel but this  is offset by servicing costs. Servicing for the diesel car was every 10,000 miles and petrol car is 20,000 miles so lots to consider to find out the most economical overall.

My local Morrisons is selling Bio-ethanol fuel, I'm assuming this is Bio-diesel and do I risk using it in my diesel car if it's any cheaper?

My car is fab if you drive a long distance at 60 miles an hour (Great for the A1!) but rubbish for town driving & if you want to bomb it up & down the M6.

i had my 4 life L200 for 7 year it great for the dogs the  out lay is petrol, tax, insurance, and serviing, have finshed paying for it i thought i me £300 better of a month  but not,.

briedog, I hardly ever allow my petrol to go to empty so to be honest have never really appreciated just how much petrol is going up. I just add £20-£30 every week.

Last year I filled up my car (not 4 x4 normal car) it cost me approx £44

Yesterday, I was on empty, it cost me £67 that is a mega increase. I couldn't believe it!
- By ceejay Date 30.05.08 10:58 UTC
We are just changing a car now and my hubby worked out that for the mileage we do a petrol will be better value.  He is much better at the maths then me - I just chose the colour!!!!

Bio-ethanol is a replacement for PETROL - don't put it in your diesel car whatever you do !!

For diesel you are better buying the more expensive stuff from Shell, BP or Esso.  Although it costs more to buy, it actually gives you better MPG as it is more efficient.  I tried it with mine and found I was saving 5 pence a mile buying the more expensive stuff to the cheaper stuff.  On 3/4 of a tank I got around 60 miles more out of it!

Same here.  This time last year my octavia cost me £40 odd to fill up - filled it up on thursday and it was £60.  It's ridiculous, and I just can't afford it!

It's disorganisation on my part, as well as laziness, that makes me use so much.  Disorganisation because I never sort out what shopping I need, so I nip to Tesco/Morrisons every day (tesco is 2.5 miles away, morrisons 1 mile) and laziness because I drive the dogs to the woods/common land to walk them rather than lead walking 10 minutes down the road to a field or 15 minutes to the park (but I do detest lead walking and the field isn't good for dogs with bad recall).

I watched a guy at Asda's 10 days ago - so it would probably be even more expensive today - fill his Jag up.  It cost him £90.90 - probably in a few weeks time he will be paying £100 to fill his car up.    I know some will say he can afford it if he's running a Jag but the prices are just getting way out of hand.
- By kazz Date 01.06.08 10:33 UTC
My Rover 25 hatch used to take about £35/£38 to fill up from close to empty and because I rarely go empty, I had not noticed the increase. However last week filled up from almost empty and it cost me 20p short of £50...............scary scary scary.

SO glad I walk to work these days. Not drive 40 mile each way.

either you have moved jobs or you are superfit LOL!

We had a drive off today at work for £53. When the police came out they said there are loads of them happening and also syphoning of fuel. They said it is since the fuel prices have rocketed.:-(

I have a p'got 207 Deisal, and get 56.3 mpg. It takes around £50 to fill it up now.
- By MADDOG [gb] Date 02.06.08 19:33 UTC
I actually felt physically sick when I filled my car up the other day.  I really do wonder how long we can go on like this.

My poor kids are dreading September when they're both full time at Primary school & so they'll have to walk 3 miles a day EVERY DAY not just 3 times a week.  Having said that it was tipping down this afternoon and my dd who's 5 didn't complain once about the walk home :-)
