Hi All, and welcome to my first post.

I have a 18 week old Golden Retriever pup who is currently being fed Hills Puppy Large Breed. This was from the breeder, and our 8 year Old GR has a Hills special diet food.

The question is, like many who ask ( I have searched but did not find anwsers ) What food would people recommend that is just as good and maybe a bit more reasonable on price?

I'm not about to go and feed Wag / Chappie etc , but is there a food that I could feed that is just as Good as Hills without paying +/- £40 for 15kg?

If Hills is the best, then so be it, he'll stay on that , your thoughts are appreciated.

'O Boy' are you going to get a lot of opinions on food and I'll start them off!!!!!!
I feed mine Arden Grange and have to say they enjoy eating it and look good on it. The resulting waste is small and doesn't smell as bad as some.
Good luck in choosing!

Next opinion please.......!

Arden grange here as well :) with Naturediet as a topper. Used to feed Orijen until  supplier ( zooplus) had difficulty getting the big bags. I buy a small bag sometimes to feed as a change!

Hills is far and away not the best...IMO it is a low/mid grade food with an overly inflated price tag :( You're paying big bucks for crappy ingredients, and their diet food is just horrible. So there's my thoughts ,sorry :-D :-D

Here are my picks:

Orijen
Timberwolf
Arden Grange
Naturediet (wet)
Prizechoice(wet)

And to a lesser extent

Jameswellbeloved
Wafcol Salmon&Potato
PAH own brand
Costco own brand

Most of these foods are available at http://www.zooplus.co.uk along with their ingredient profiles etc.

I'm currently feeding Arden Grange and Costco own brand to my two (one has a VERY fussy tummy) and they are doing really well on it.

It doesn't cost much to feed them and the poo produced is pretty minimal.

For an idea of cost the Kirlkand (costco brand) is £15 for 18kg and the AG Prestige is £29 for 15kg.

AG do cheaper foods starting around £20 for 15kg.

Do you mean prescription food or a lower calorie food?

I am feeding Burgess supadog well being and have never had so many comments about how well the boys look.It also seems to be the one they enjoy most.It is £24.99 for 12.5 Kg.
I would suggest trying Autarky if you want to go even cheaper...about £15 for 15Kg

I used to feed Autarky before Costco stopped doing it.  It suited my dogs well but they were both a little lean, not skinny, on it.

Hi please tell me where you gan buy AG for £20 a bag.
I,ve just paid £36.99 for a 15kg salmon one

I got mine from http://www.berriewoodwholesale.co.uk/pages/arden-grange-748.htm

I have had to 'phone them about an order and found them very helpful and they sorted my query with no problems.
Salmon and rice one for 1 bag is £26.59 plus delivery and mine was delivered the day after I ordered it!!
I don't know if this is the cheapest price for it as I don't use this one so have never shopped round for it.

Some of the other variants are cheaper though.

Thanks for that
so is there a minimum order for this?

ktee - i was told by an assistant in pets at home that their own food is an exact copy of hills food, just at a lower price, so is it the price you dont like or the actual food stuff?

I wonder if that is true also for the cat biscuits as I have a really fussy cat who will only eat Hills biscuits (not her staple diet, but it's the only  biscuits she WILL eat).  But she wil NOT touch the PAH own brand.

Thanks for all your replies and suggestions.  I think my Golden will be moving to Arden Grange Large breed slowly over the next month , with a view to then move to the Adult when he's 12 months.

Berriwood wholesale look very reasonsable at around £23 per 15kg ! for Adult.

I will keep an eye on my boy and let you all know of any changes. ( coat condition etc etc )

Thanks again.

Why not contact Arden Grange via their website. I'm sure Ness will send you some samples
