so, as you all may know, my girl gave birth to 10 puppys on monday, on monday night we noticed one of them always at the back of the que for food and warmth, i rang the on call vet and told her, she said it will be ok, just keep putting him on, easier said than done with ten, so we did as said, yeaterday morning he had a good belly full, then from then on he kept being put to the back again, we just kept putting him on and then this morning, he just wouldnt suckle, he was too weak, so i had him to the vets knowing they would be able to help (so i thought), he should be fine she sad, he was paddling, took him back home and he died 3hours after,

is it just me or could the vets not do anything for him, iv seen it on tv what they can do so why not offer this little boy some help,

could someone please tell me that im right and they should have offered him some sort of treatment,

If there was something wrong with him, it's usually best to let such a pup die, as chances are it would not grow up to be a healthy adult. Nature DOES know. If it was just that he wasn't getting enough milk, then the vets couldn't have done anything -it would be up to you. If you have a smaller pup who gets pushed aside, remove some of the other pups now and then to let it get a chance to suckle without being disturbed. To me though it sounds more likely something was actually wrong -it happens. Especially in a large litter.

as for paying vet i would be gutted too, but i suppose,
they have to make a living just like the rest of us,
but that, said if you have a 'fading pup' theres not al ot
you can do . my advice would have been get a stronger
pup to feed on the teat first to get the milk going, and
then get the weaker pup to feed on the teat. sounds like
you did your best for it, and it just didnt work out.
just concentrate your efforts on the pups you have left
its not unknown to loose one from a litter just bad luck.

a friend of mine who had a large litter split them into two and Mum fed one group then the other this made it easier for her to see that they were all getting a good feed.Puppies all survived and thrived very well a beautiful litter of similar weights.

We have had puppies like this in the past some we have lost but we where told once to give a mix of honey and water as well as expressing milk from the mother and giving it to the puppy through a siringe or something simular every two hours or so and we have got some through to be healthy puppies like this, but otherts we have lost and although it is sad to lose a puppy it is natures way of survival of the fittest also there could have been something internally wrong with the puppy. Was the mother pushing the puppy away at all? some mothers will do this as it is natural instinct that that puppy is unlikely to survive.

my litter in jan of 9 had one puppy that was no smaller at birth but failed to thrive like the others, at about 10 days it was noticably smaller and not feeding very well, also dehydrated, my vet said chances are there is something wrong internally and she would not make it, however my instinct was to try, and did i try, i fed her every hr for 10 days and she was doing great then suddenly started to go the other way and died in my hands at 3 weeks old, i sobbed. it was only after that i could admit that i knew she probably wouldnt make it and i could have saved myself alot of heartache, not to mention NO sleep if i had let her go from the start, but i just cant let them go without trying as if i tried with 10 pups and saved just one it would have been worth all the hard work!

so i am sure that this little one also just wasnt meant to be, dont beat yourself up (hard i know) the fact that you are so upset shows that you care and that is the main thing - good luck with all the rest x

Its Horrible wicked world but I always have believed that Mother nature knows best and she throws away the unhealthy ones,wether human or animal,I know been there and done it etc,and at the end of the day its  better to have a healthy litter. I no what your'e feeling ,its awful, but it will fade believe me .keep your chin up and be strong for those other babies.Dachmad

thankyou everyone for support and so on, we had him cremated with all the other dogs in the vets that didnt make it, my litter of 9 are doing very well, im a paranoid wreck tho encase she sits on them by accident with there being soooooo many, does anyone know when they will be a bit safer as im scared to leave them even a split second, unless my girl is lying down i fear she may squash them, the joys of motherhood lol

I'm afraid I would not leave them for one minute try to have a friend or family member around so that you can do shifts if its possible, if you really cant help but leave them for a while take Mum with you as puppies will be fine on their own .
Even when Mum is lying down puppies find a way around the back and somehow they can get trapped pig rails are good but not completely safe, I have still had to pull puppies from the back of Mum when they are squealing they just seem to ignore thier cries for help.
after 2 and half to 3 weeks you can rest a little but even then you must be vigilent.

i always sleep on the sofa until the puppies are 4 weeks, only then can they move themselves out of the way, i get no sleep as one little squeak and i am up to check, very tiring but i wouldnt do it any other way!
oh yes the joys of motherhood!!! :)

yup we have an air bed downstairs, we do shifts, im at work, couldnt get time off so oh is doing dutys, hes great,

it's always sad to lose a little one, I cried buckets over a girl that died after 2 days of hand rearing, and it still upsets o/h now when he thinks about her :( we didn't send her to the vets for cremation tho, she's in a plant pot, and it was so nice to see the tulips come up and now the agapanthus is shooting too, so I can think of her

as has been said, it is for the best, even though it breaks our hearts

I didn't start to really relax until the pups were about 5 weeks old, and once they hit 6 weeks Mum stoped feeding anyway, so wasn't sleeping with them.....

even when they leave to their new homes, you don't stop worrying, LOL

good luck with the rest of the pups, enjoy them, time flies by :)

i know, i woke about 6times through the night, there starting already with there temper tantrums, its soooo funny, theyve started to suckle on the vet bed, not realising then scream so loud because they cant get nothing out of it, lol,
i sent him for cremation because i was thinking he would get cold on his own, im so soft that way, to be honest we expected to loose one at least because of the size of the litter, but not that one, it was the only one who was like its mother, the rest all like father, shame tho,
