The dog associates the shock with the snake, not the collar or whoever fitted the collar.

Not always true I'm afraid - here's some info on snake avoidance treatment
that went wrong:

http://www.hollysden.com/say-no-to-shock-collars.htm#E_Collars_and_Snake-Breaking

if a "trainer" is using high levels particularly, there is a chance the dog can associate the pain with anything in the environment
including other dogs/ children/owners/the trainer/snake/a gate/grass/concrete etc.

The link gave 3 cases in which the e-collar snake avoidence went wrong, 2 of the cases were done at the same school and with the 3rd case, they didn't realise the dog was so freaked out it didn't learn the lesson (hardly a competant trainer!!!). Was it the collar that was the problem or was it not used correctly (ie. poor trainers)?

The trainer who doesn't agree with using e-collars for snake breaking goes on to say,
"I live in So Cal where the rattlesnakes are predicted to be worse this year due to our rainy winter.   I review with all of my clients their options (management, training, vaccine) and always mention that THERE IS NO 100% in any training and nothing replaces vigilance around long grass, bushes & brush, a solid recall and a short leash on trails. "
Now, in this persons own words any form of training is not 100%, so how can 3 snake breaking failiurs be a reason not to use an e-collar (considering the apparent success rates) and if no training is 100% reliable how can you have a solid recall ??

You can't vaccinate against venom.

If you've read the success stories I posted a link to, you will see that dogs have alerted owners to the presence of snakes in thier houses and gardens (places you can't keep your dog away from), the snake avoidence lesson saving the dogs lifes and thier families.

I can't find anywhere that offers an alternative method to the e-collar.
