Topic Dog Boards / General / Holiday cottage recommendation?
- By sugar [in] Date 26.05.08 21:07 UTC
Hi

I was wondering if anyone can recommend a holiday cottage that takes two dogs?

Have been looking on several websites that we have used before but most cottages only take one dog.

It also has to have a completely enclosed garden , which isin't always able to see from the pictures ( and we've been caught out before - which made the holiday a tad less relaxing!! ). We like somewhere in the country a bit away from it all as we like to get away from the noise of the town for a bit.

Not too fussy where we go but were thinking either - Wales , Cornwall or Scotland.

Was hoping that you guys on here would be able to help in our search :)

Thanks , Kate

Hi Kate
We are going to Devon in 3 weeks in a cottage with 3 dogs. It did say only 2 but I phoned the owner up and asked if she would take 3 (westies) and she said yes. We are like you needed somewhere with a secure garden and this looks ideal. Only about a mile of Exmoor too, so hopefully some nice walks too. So can't comment yet, but can let you know what It's like when we get back. A lot of what we looked at didn't have secure gardens which was a shame as there is some nice cottages around.

That would be great - we're not going till late November so am starting to look early anyway!  The last property we went to said it had an enclosed garden but when we got there there was a large gap in the hedge near the road ( which wasn't busy but was a road none the less ) so i am a bit more wary this time round and was looking for a more personal recommendation rather than details on a website.

Thanks

Hi Kate
A cottage we can thoroughly recommend with extremely dog friendly landlords is Killiehuntly Cottage, available through the letting agency Unique Scotland. It is on a private farm track, standing on its own. We have stayed there on numerous occasions and although the garden is not huge, it is completely secure. At the back of the cottage is a very large field that runs down to the river Spey, and on each occasion the owners have moved livestock and told us we are free to walk in there. To the front of the cottage you have hundreds of acres of forest to explore (owned by the same people). Sheep have never been a problem, however there are quite a lot of deer in the forest. However, unless you walk early in the morning, it is unlikely you will see them.

A funny tale relating to this cottage is that on our first trip we had called at the local village for supplies when we saw a car full, and I mean totally full of dogs. Not exagerating, there were dogs just everywhere, and squashed in the drivers seat was a little old dear. It stopped us in our tracks as she drove past and we had quite a laugh. Later, after arriving at the cottage we heard a car approaching up the track and couldn't believe it when we saw it was the very same car. The old lady waved as she went past and again we laughed, we had never seen anything like it. They covered the dash board, all the seats, and there were numerous heads stuck out of each window. I know it isn't very responsible, but it is one of the funniest things I have ever seen. Later that day, there was a knock on the door and the old lady was there, welcoming us to the cottage. It turned out she was the Lady of the Estate and an absolute dog lover. On each stay we have received a lovely welcome, but they have never pestered us and we have felt totally relaxed.

I hope this helps and if you have any other question, please feel free to ask.

Hi Kate
Have you tried Stillwells cottages - they give you details of the cottages but you deal direct with the owner so can check the important points like enclosed gardens etc (and tell them how good your two dogs are compared with one naughty one!!)  Many of the cottages seem to be much more dog friendly than they are through other cottage agencies.
Best wishes
Alex

Not in the area that you asked for but we spent a lovely week in the Lakes at Mirefoot cottages - absolute doggy heaven!

Hi , We stayed at a lovely cottage in Cornwall last year. It was called Trefanny Hill, its a little rural hamlet with a cluster of cottages very spread out.
Its peaceful and the cottages are beautiful, they accept dogs, we took our 3 and we stayed in a fantastic one right at the end of a little no through lane, it had a large enclosed lawn area, and from the gate led onto a woodland walk with a big pond.

Also in the cottage it had stone floors so great for dogs when they were hot.

It wasnt cheap though, think was about £1000 for the week but we got it cheaper as when I rang was asking for a 1bed cottage but said wanted one where no one walked past and they offered us this one for same price as it was free.
Have a look at the website, just do a search on trefanny hill, looe

We went here in April. Really lovely and will definately go again. They even allow dogs in the bistro which made evenings much easier.

We regularly rent cottages from mackays agency in scotland.  They're on the net.  We take Copper and lots of the properties allow dogs and more than one.  We've never had to pay a damage deposit or pay extra for the dog.  We've always had a great time and the cottages are really good value.  Hope you find something :)

Not Scotland but any good?

I know of wooden lodges for holiday lets but no cottages but I will look.   Any particular area of Scotland?  Perthshire is nice and handy for travelling as you have the A9 north & south.

What a fabulous find when we visited Chapel Knap earlier this year. The cottage is a high quality fab place and excepts dogs, I sure they are happy to have more than won Dog.Very clean, great facilities and views to die for.No wonder this place is pretty fully booked. You will love it.Highlights are the fire, the leather sofas, the fine local books, fully equipped kitchen, powerful showers, the quiet!.This place is 5 star all the way and I vouch you won't find a more special place in all the UK.

We've been to Dumpledale - enclosed good sized garden, lovely house and super owners.  Also nice farm walks so thumbs up for multiple dog owners

This is in the village where my parents live...literally right at the top of the same lane....
We havent stayed there personally yet, but anyone who does says its a lovely friendly place. We have booked for the Xmas hols, (too many family staying with parents) and we have 3 dogs and all that was said was that any damage done by them had to be paid for. There are plenty of holiday lets around the same area. I lived here from the age of 11 till I left to join the Army at 17...very peaceful and some fabulous walks..in November there wont be any "tourists" either so the beaches will be empty and the cliffside walks free of other dogs and it will be even quieter.

Love these threads, always save some for future use. None of these in areas you've suggested, but you did say you're open to ideas ...

A friend has just come back from Skimblescott Farm and reckoned it was fabulous.

Always have to put a good word in for Grove Cottages. Various of them do have enclosed gardens.

This one in Lochcarron takes 2 dogs maximum - sadly a £10 charge/dog/week applied

I've not seen it since it's been refurbished, but a fabulous location. I was under the impression it was going to be a 'real dog friendly cottage' after the refurb, ie not one of the many hundreds that put a 2 dog limit on :-( That rules me out ever staying there again then .... back to me tent or caravan.
