Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Day 59/60 how exciting!
- By Gemini05 Date 26.05.08 14:20 UTC
Hi I have been watching all the threads about bitches who are expecting litters and going into labour!
My girl is day 59/60 and just keeps sleeping all the time bless her!
She has been picky with her food for the last couple of days, and spends most of her time laying either in the whelping box or by the open back door, sleeping!

She has moments of coming to me or my OH for cuddles and seems to say to us, 'oh I am so proud, look at me mum' my OH keeps asking me if she is in labour but I keep reassuring him that she is fine, no shaking yet, not much nesting going on and she seems to be going through the sleeping period at the moment.
I will keep you posted as things progress.
The actual question is, she doesn't seem interested in much food, which is understandable and she has been sick this morning, I am sure this is normal but just wanted to check! xx

Im sure she hasnt much room in her tummy for food so i wouldnt be worried about that.
just tempt her with little bits now and again, perhaps some nice chicken. I hope it all goes well and be sure to let us know how you get on. I have a photo of one of my girls with her newborn pups and everyone says she is smiling, and she certainly looks very proud and happy with her babies. Im sure your girl is very proud of herself too, and rightly so!

Hi Peaches and thanks,
My girl ate all her tea this evening, but I will try little but often food for her.
She seems so tired poor girl, plenty of rest for her (and me!) until the D day!
Can't wait it is so magical when dogs give birth,,,,,,

My girl didn't really do any shaking or nesting when she had pups last year, just spent the day popping out to the toilet. At around 4.30 I saw her hunching her back and having a contraction, and at 5.30 the first puppy popped out, luckily while she was in the whelping box and not on the sofa!!

- By Gemini05 Date 28.05.08 08:48 UTC
still calm here with my girl, bit of nesting last night but soon fell asleep! :)
Puppies moving around, everything ready for the D day.!

She still laying outside the whelping box but next to it, had to help her scratch her ear last night as she just couldn't get her hind leg round to do it herself!

Only ate a little food this morning, now resting.
bless her xx

UPDATE:
Well my girl is day 62/63 today, she had me awake at 3am this morning needing a wee!
This morning did not want her boiled chicken and rice, and has been shaking on and off.
I believe I should be seeing the pitter patter of tiny feet within the next 12/24 hours!
She is laying out on the patio at the moment, and comes in to have some cuddles keep you all posted xx

UPDATE!
Hi everyone well ,,,,,,,,,
We started at 930am and believe we have finished now! :)
We have 4 Girls and 3 boys!
Sadly we should have had 6 girls but two born still born quite upsetting as this is my first experience of still borns, tried everything in the book but sadly was not able to revive them :(
I have a boy pup that keeps squeaking alot and moving around but seems to still have fluid on the lungs or something, I phoned the vet who told me to swing him and rub him which I have done, he has suckled but still seems to be a bit crocky.
Any suggestions would be great as although he feeds, still worried about him. xx
- By Dogz Date 30.05.08 16:21 UTC
Congratulations on your babies! Okay...if I have to...puppies :)
I have seen the swinginging done before, I gues it's to clear the airways of any excess fluid.
I dont know how to encourage pups to 'cough it up'. But think if he's feeding okay he will be fine.
KAren :)

Congratulations.  7 babies. :)  I would give the swinging a go, we had one a bit like that with a litter we bred years ago, he was fine after a few minutes of swinging, I got one of the aspirators this time, but I don't think that it would be any good for your situation.  Good luck.  :)

Hubby just left with the boy pup that seems to be crocking I am worried about him so off the vets.
Stopped feeding as trouble with breathing, but still squeaking for food, gosh I am so worried
- By Gemini05 Date 30.05.08 18:34 UTC
so so sad, the poor boy pup has gone the the rainbow bridge.
He had to be PTS due to a terrible Cleft Pallet
- By AnnieM [gb] Date 30.05.08 18:44 UTC
Oh, so sorry. :(  Sleep tight little man and go join your sisters.
Enjoy the rest of your litter, they will help you feel better. :)  Hugs.
- By SharonM Date 30.05.08 20:23 UTC
So sorry to hear about you pup with CP, sadly we had 2 in our last litter the same which had to be pts, this was the litter we were hoping to keep a boy from too, but sadly it wasn't to be as I wouldn't risk breeding from any of them.

Run free at the bridge little man.

What a shame:-( but better now than a couple of weeks down the line when you are really attached.

Hi and thanks for your kind posts.
With Cleft Pallettes are they hereditory? (SP) I do not know much about them.
- By JeanSW Date 02.06.08 22:11 UTC
So sorry to hear that you lost your little one.  You did the right thing getting him off to the vet so fast though, rather than him suffering.  I realise it's still very emotional though.  Sending hugs  {{{ HUGS }}}  Jean

Hi and thanks again for all your kind posts.

My six pups are doing really well, and mum is such a perfect mummy to her babies!  She is now sleeping outside the whelping box, right next to it, and as soon as her pups awake she is there to wash, feed and cuddle them!

I would just like to say as some other threads have mentioned, I totally agree that dog breeding should never be taken lightly, alot of people I speak to say they would never want to do breeding due to the hard work and emotional strain it can bring as well as the financial side.
And then there are the other lot of people they say to me oh you must make loads of money, and I soon put them right and tell them there is no actual profit from breeding, once you take into account the expense of rearing a foundation bitch, vet fees, food, health checks, stud fees, travel to stud, blood tests, vets fees after litter is born, puppy food, etc.
And the most hard part is when you lose a puppy at birth, or even worse if your loving bitch becomes ill during or after pregnancy, I feel that all of this needs to be well thought out by ANYONE considering breeding.

I am still very upset with experiencing two still born pups, and keep asking myself if I did all I can to revive them before I had to stop, and the fact of my little boy pup that had the cleft palette, I knew something was not right with him as his breathing was not right and he just didn't seem to be settled like the others, and although only a couple of hours old I still found it very upsetting when he had to be put to sleep.

So I would say to anyone that thinks breeding is an easy ride to make money, you are seriously very wrong and need to think very carefully.

Im so sorry to hear about your little boy. I totally agree with everything in your post. How true. We had a stillborn pup from our first litter and it really upset me. Her skin was even stuck to the pup born afterwards so must have been gone for a while but i still tried so hard to get her going as i couldn't just do nothing. My 2nd litter my girl had an infection at 7 weeks in whelp and it was a nightmare just hoping pups would be ok. Luckily i have a fantastic vet who kept a really close eye on her and scanned pups every few days and all was well. And then there is the worry of finding homes, sleepless nights next to the whelping box for the firts 3 weeks. Not much fun at all really is it! Im planning my 3rd litter for later this year so hoping all goes well but we just never know what will happen. Its certainly not the money maker some people seem to think it is! Hope all your babies continue to thrive!
