My 11 Week old pup is 'mounting' his toys!

Im confused -should I let him carry on or stop him?
- By DEARLADY [gb] Date 22.05.08 05:56 UTC
he's just playing!!

I always find it amusing when young pups do this :)

I hope you're having lots of fun with your boy, I love 'em at that age....

If you find if unacceptable then just distract him into playing a different game, it is just play, so do not make a big deal of it.
- By Ooh to be.. [gb] Date 22.05.08 10:37 UTC
I dont find it unacceptable at all, Im just new to it and still learning and want to do everything right- a few people have said when he gets older he will still do it and start 'squirting' lol.
Obviously I dont want that to happen and I have no intention of getting him neutered. Just worried if he will carry it on or whether it is just a phase?!

I have also been told that it is because he has a toy that is bigger than him, its big giraffe, but he loves it and it helps him snuggle and sleep so I wont take it away from him. I know Im probably being silly- but I dont want it to carry on into adult hood.

Thank you all- please help x

Totally normal.  My aunt has a male min pin, and he does the same thing to his one toy.  Its only the one, too.

If you are going to be using him, I have heard of stories of people correcting their dogs harshly for mounting their toys, and then the dogs refuse to breed a female.

Its totally normal, and if you dont have an issue with it, then dont stop him from doing it.

Milo is nearly 17 weeks and does the same with his cuddly dog :-). He doesn't do it to anything else so we are not too worried. We just try and distract him if he gets too involved lol.

Like I say, no issue with it now- but when he gets older I dont want him humping everything - and his 'lipstick' as my boyfriend calls it poking out LOL
- By Nova Date 22.05.08 17:52 UTC
Most pups' do this and some teenagers but they stop when mature, well all mine have. I do not correct them doing this to toys, beds or one another but would not allow it if people were involved, but as I say it has never happened to me. They will on the odd occasion hump my castrated dog but the spayed bitch is by far the worst offender with this.

Love this subject as it is very relevant ( sort of ) to us at the moment!!

Took Louis to the vet as he had a very small amount of green discharge not even every day! We told the vet we thought it was a slight infection from him squatting so low that his winky touches the floor - he always wees like ythis. Oh no no says the vet, he has damaged himself by getting excited all the time, we always see this in entire dogs!!!
We had to disagree as 1. he has yet to have a full erection (slight pink tip showing on a number of occassions) 2. He doesn't hump ( he did this about 4 or 5 times when he was 3 months old, but nothing since - he is 7 months )

We told the vet and he doesn't believe us. He said he must hump his toys etc when you are not there. We said he has never humped a toy in his life - it was OH's arm :) :) and we would notice as he is  with at least one of us for the majority of the day if not both - you should have seen his face when he said he does it when you are asleep LOL we said he sleeps on the bed with us ;)
As far as I know, some dogs do and some dogs don't...Any way, vet wants to give him a jab to stop him getting excited!?! Eh? he's not excited

You should read this lovely thread :-D His winky sounds perfectly normal to me :-D

I was under the impression that a slight discharge is normal?? All my male dogs have had it, when I got my pup I asked the vet about it & he said it's a normal discharge, nothing to worry about unless it was excessive &/or there was redening/soreness around the tip.

My pup has never humped either (10 months old), but his 'lipstick' pops out most of the time, due to the way he sits (I think it must be common in his breed?), quite embarrasing because it is rather large and you just can't miss seing it, in fact it's damn-right scarey looking on the odd occasion it's erect :(

Edit - I've done it again :( not read all the posts - zara as allready posted on the discharge bit :)

A slight discharge is normal; the time to get concerned is when there's a lot of it and it smells. Also lipsticks can emerge at the oddest of times - having a poo is typical for my boys; I reckon it's because of the effort and the awkward position!

Zarah, mastifflover and jeangenie

Thank you, thank you, thank you :)

We have had so many niggly issues with our vet, this is just one more to add to the pile. OH even said he gets the impression the vet doesn't like me as I always question him and his diagnosis....latest is he wants to change our wormer to program to do fleas and heartworm - it doesn't do french heartworm though and thats the one we need to worm against!! I really only want to deflea him if necessary as well preferably with something natural...

Maybe the time has come for a change!

ah, glad it's not just my younger boy then!!

I couldn't believe my eyes when I noticed his lipstick whilst he was pooing the other day!! LOL

and yes, my thought was the positioning too ;)

Just how un-knowledgeable can a vet be, it is down right staggering. Of course it is normal, it happens in all the dogs I have ever had and in 60+ years it is a good few. When they are reaching maturity it can even drip.

I am fed up with vets who do not own dogs and probable do not like them making remarks like this and trying to talk people into neutering impossibly young never explaining the effects that this may cause, perhaps they are rubbing their hands or more likely they are down right ignorant.
