OK heres a situation......if you were asked whether you had a suitable stud by someone you know and trust (although their bitch aint the greatest) and they have a new baby....a first baby just a few months old, and live in a tiny town house (rented).....and they have no money......would you let them use your dog? To be honest the bitch side of it is irelevant....just want peoples opinions considering the domestic set up really!!!! I know what my answer would be....and im speechless at the incredulity of others behaviour...so please tell me what you would do if put in the above situation?

IMO with a new baby i dont think they would have time to rear a litter. One of them at least would be working leaving the mum of the baby at home with the baby, i barely have time to catch a few hours sleep when i have puppies nevermind look after a baby. Im sure in a rented house the landlord wouldnt be best pleased of a litter of puppies. For their sake and the pups id respectfully decline. Maybe in a years time when they have the time and facilities for a litter.

IMO I wouldn't be allowing the use of my dog. Not necessarily because I didn't think they would try to do the best by the puppies but with a young baby it would be so hard and if they are short on money how are they going to afford to raise the puppies properly or if an emergency arose and the bitch needed a c section or veterinary treatment how would they pay the vets bill? Also living in a rented house there is normally a limit on the amount of dogs you can keep so what would happen if they didn't manage to sell all the litter or in a year ended up with dogs coming back to them from the litter especially if this is in your breed Sam as they aren't the smallest breed lol. From the sounds of it now may not be the right time for them to think about having a litter.

Hi ....if they didn't use your dog  would they go and use somebody else's dog?

Not a chance!!
1.  The Bitch is not good
2.  They live in v. small rented house with a young baby.  Would the landlord be happy about this situation?
3.  They don't have much money (a litter costs a lot of money to rear properly)

hmmm well glad its not just me thats so anti this mating. Anyway what the hell. its none of my business even though this lass asked my advice (i own sister to her bitch) and she has still just gone ahead and done it regardless. Just hope she doesnt try to ring me now for some more advice now they are born :(  :(
I think the landlords ok as hes a vet and shes had a basett litter there before no probs. Its the new baby thing i cant get over. Personally im thinking she s a bit naive but as for the person who encouraged her...and then surprise surprise....let her use her stud dog....well...words fail me! :(

14 years ago I had an unexpected/unplanned litter (blame the ex for not separating ;-) ) Anyway, 2 weeks after the pups were born I had a baby. I was lucky that I had a teenage daughter around to help, and a husband that worked shifts (firefighter) It was still hard work. It was still my responsibilty to arrange feeding, cleaning and WALKING the dogs, even though I still had to look after baby. I would not recommend it to anyone. As this ladies baby is older it will need more of her time. So no, I owuldn't let anyone use my dog under those circumstances. I would ask her to wait until next year, at least.

Nope!

Anyone who reads my posts will know I didn't even have my own personal dog whilst I had babies and toddlers, so there is no way I would be breeding, especially in a set up as described.

But need to ask why she wished to breed?  Is it purely for money, a pup, for show purpses?

Having a vet as the landlord is obviously a plus.

But no I would not stud my dog to a home like that, as for raising a litter there, I'm very particular about space, time and giving and doing the best possible, it would not reach my criteria at all I'm afraid.

Quite simply - NO. And the fact you are expressing a doubt yourself says it all. Doesnt sound ideal even in the future but think the timing is completey wrong at the moment. :-)

Its crazy to even think of having a litter when you have just had a new child, even crazier if someone lets them use their dog as they obviously havent vetted the people, their living conditions or even their bitch if she isnt a good example of the breed :(

People get sillier, I have just had an e-mail froma lady wanting a puppy soon after June 25th as she is having a baby around that date and wants a couple of weeks to get used to the new baby before she gets a pup!!!

Had a baby when I had an adult dog, and the baby was hard enough work never mind a well behaved good dog and all the other jobs that need doing. Couldn't imagine a baby and puppies...when would you sleep? :(

I had one like that a few years ago, they thought the time of her maternity leave would b e ideal to house-train the pup before she returned to full time work.

I asked where she would find the hours in the day to Work, be a wife, mother and spend at least two hours a day undivided attention on a pup (on top of feeding etc)?  Needless to say she didn't get a pup and I passed her name to other breeders and the breed club so that she wouldn't' get one from them.

The lady was very indignant when I told her the reasons why no reputable breeder would let her have a pup when she has a new born, she then asked if I knew of any one with pups ready now so she had a month before the baby was born!! Head and brick wall I am afraid with that one. I have done the same as you did Barbara but no doubt if she is that desperate she will get one from some BYB or pup farm, you can just see the ball in motion, new baby, pup, not coping, pup neglected and if lucky ends up in rescue.

I think I have slightly double standards really. I do not have a stud dog, but would not allow someone in the original circumstances mentioned by the OP to use him if I did have one. I would also not think it a good idea for just abotu anyone with a new baby or young children to have a litter of pups, nor to buy a pup.

However, I myself would probably think nothing of having a litter of pups with a new baby, nor buying a pup and have done both with young children, the youngest of which is disabled. My bitches breeder was happy to let us have her as a pup in those circumstanes after getting to know us, and also happy to lift her endorsements in the same circumstances. All of this was with a partner who works away, so I was practically a single parent. When my pups were small, they absolutely came before the children, although the children got all the love, care and attention they needed. However, I appreciate not all people are like me, (I also started riding and looking after my three horses the day I left hospital after my third child) and most wouldn't find it so easy.
