Have just had a lovely litter of pups. Can anyone give me an idea on how much a vet will charge to remove the back dew claws?

Depends on your vet, but my litter of 6 cost me £70 for front and back dew claws removal, and it took me alot of time to actually find a vet that will remove dew claws nowadays! thankfully made all the phone calls before the litter was born as I knew the dew claws needed removing when pups reached 3 days old, but alot of vets did not remove them unless there was a medical reason :(

My vet used to remove the dew claws, but as soon as the docking ban came into effect, he refused to do them

Curious really if a breeder were to dock their pups tails, what actually happens do they get fined etc?
I am asking because im looking to buy a pup that up untill the stupid ban came in always had their tails docked.
If anyone can shed any light would be appreciated surely there must be some loopholes somewhere.

if the pups are shown to be going to a working home then its ok as its a matter of the dogs safety.

Hi thanks for that, what criteria actually fits to call it a working home?

Only a Vet can dock though, but anyone can do dewclaws, crazy really.

yes definatley crazy they really condradict themselves.
If its a case of them wanting the dog to be as normal as possible then why crossbreed to acheive other breeds.
They should have been concentrating on more serious issues in the world than oooo lets ban the docking of dogs tails!
sorry to moan they just really get my back up!
Always have my pups dew claws done, my vet charges £4 per pup, and takes them off at 2 days at the same time as having their first vet check, pups just give a tiny little squeal, I only have one boy with dew claws and it was one I bought in and he hates them!! IMO £4 is a small price to pay to remove something that is so unecessary and to save the worry of them ripping one off accidentally'

I assume your talking about hind dewclaws, as certainly all the dogs I know use their front dew claws and none of mine have ever had a problem with them.

The only dog I've had with front dewclaws didn't use them, and ripped them both several times.

Same with me. When I was young two of our pets ripped front dewclaws.
I have all dewclaws removed at 3-4 days. £3 per pup. Mine generally only have front.
It isn't just the ripping a huge % of pet folk just never clip them.
yes I meant the front dew claws, so easy and virtually pain free to have them removed, totally takes away the risk of ripping them, and with my breed they are prone to ripping them!! it is also on a personal level very painful when they jump up for a cuddle and the flipping dew claws catch you round the neck ha ha
Hi thanks for that, what criteria actually fits to call it a working home? The breeder has to prove that the pups are likely to be used as working dogs and this only applies to certain breeds, if you're in England these are any HPR breed or combination of HPR breeds, any Spaniel breed or combination of Spaniel breeds or any Terrier breed or combination of Terrier breeds so basically either a working gundog or working Terrier. In Wales the breeds permitted are more limited and the 'combinations' can't be docked so you couldn't dock a Sprocker pup for instance and in Scotland it's completely illegal full stop. To get the pups docked the vet has to sign a declaration that the owner of the bitch has provided the required documentation to prove that she is a working dog and the pups are likely to be used for this purpose. The documentation can be a current shotgun certificate, a letter from a gamekeeper, shoot organiser, club official or pest controller (there are a few others as well) stating that they know the bitch and that she's used for working on his land/in his shoot/for pest control as well as a signed declaration by the bitch owner (or their agent) to say that she is of the breed they say she is.
