Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / my pup wont drink water?
- By lfclisar [gb] Date 09.05.08 21:53 UTC
I got my 15 week old king charles pup when he was 8 weeks old and he will not drink water. However if I hold an ice cube in my hand he will lick it.His vet said as long as he eats soaked dry food, which I mix with canned food,he will be getting enough water through that.I am becoming increasingly concerned as the weather is scorching and he likes to sit in the sun (occasionally returning indoors). I do not know what to do as he is my first pet.

try adding some goats milk to his water to encourage him to drink . Plus soak his food for a good while and serve it reasonably wet.
are you sure he isnt drinking? he may do it when you are not around.. measure the amount of water in his bowl .

Have you been in contact with the  breeder to ask if he drank water with the litter?

Also dont let him sit in the sun as he can get sunburnt unless its a shady part of the garden .

as above, I would put a drop of milk in the water and then diminish the amount of milk until he is drinking water. Have you noticed if it is cold water straight from the tap that he doesn't like?? One of mine likes it ice cold when it's straight out of the tap, whereas her brother prefers it when it's at room temperature - depending on your water hardness and smell of chlorine etc maight have an impact?? just a few thoughts :)

agree - add milk - our bernese doesn't drink very much water but a few drops of milk (you don't need much) in it and it all gets lapped up

My dog doesn't like water in a plastic bowl, he was going out drinking from puddles etc, and not drinking from his bowl, we changed the bowl and then he would drink from it.
He also doesn't like softened water, and will only drink the water from the unsoftened tap that we have, but he still prefers rainwater if he can get it, maybe the chemicals in tap water put him off.

My dog loves water, tap, river - sea !. However, when we are home he prefers to drink from the two bowls I put outside for him and the cat. It's still from the tap but he doesn't seem to know it's exactly the same as in his bowl in the kitchen !.

My Cavalier Henry doesn't drink very much, and when we are at a show he doesn't really drink at all - if it's hot I have a Jif lemon which I emptied and filled with water which I trickle into his mouth if he's panting a lot. It would be worth measuring, a young Cav puppy won't drink a huge amount, specially with the soaked food and all. If he likes ice cubes it might be worth giving him cold water rather than room temperature? Don't let him sit outside too long though, sometimes they really don't have the sense to come in before getting heatstroke!!

I agree with the milk. When our v.young Border had an op ( about 16 weeks old) he was quite distressed and would not drink, so I put a small drop of milk in it which clouded the water and he polished off the lot. Are you using a coloured bowl? I only ask because Jake still will only drink from a blue bowl, willnot touch water from a metal or stone couloured one! no idea why when he will cheerfully lap from a muddy puddle.
