Hi all

I have a question  I am hoping some of you may be able to answer for me :)

Do any of you supplement your bitches when they are in season if they are going to stud on that season?  If so, can I ask what supplements you give please?

Thank you :)

Hi, I am a novice breeder in that my first litter is now only a week and a half old, and I have many questions myself! However, I fed my 4 and a half year old Golden Retriever on Pro Plan Sensitive, without any extra supplements. We did start to give a watered down milk near the end of her pregnancy, and a little cottage cheese now and then, but generally, I was told, if you are feeding a good quality feed then supplementing shouldn't be necessary. I have heard that over-supplementing calcium can cause worse problems than not supplementing. She is very healthy and vet said prior to whelping that she was in very good shape to whelp. Just have her on a good quality diet, and keep up the exercise so her back end doesn't get too big as can cause problems in whelping.

Apologies if you are an experienced breeder and just wondered about supplements! :-s

I give Folic Acid as a supplement, well in advance of the season, if I plan to mate the bitch. I keep it up through most of the pregnancy, although it's during the first trimester it can make a difference.
In my breed Folic Acid is given to try to avoid dermoid sinus. In other breeds I know it's thought to help agains cleft palates.

Folic Acid here too, and feed Royal Canin HT42D .  You really shouldn't need anything else if you are feeding a good quality food.

Same again Royal Canin HT42D and Folic Acid with an occasional meal of raw food.

We gave wheatgerm oil to our bitch for a few weeks prior to mating.

Okay silly question coming up - is it just the normal Folic Acid for humans?  And just one tablet a day even for toy breeds?

What does the wheatgerm provide?  I have heard that it is an anti-oxidant too :)

Thank you.

The wheatgerm is a Vitamin E supplement given to given to maintain fertility in both male and female dogs.
Continue to give it to your bitch for three weeks after mating to protect against abortion or absorption.
