Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Puppy diarrhoea, or normal puppy poo?!
- By littlelawny [gb] Date 15.05.08 14:02 UTC
Hi, this is my first litter of pups and first for my Golden Retriever. She did a fantastic job and is a wonderful mum! On Monday (12th May) she had antibiotics for Mastitis, which thankfully has gone now, but puppies seem to have quite runny poo. Could this be to do with mastitis & antibiotics or is this just normal for 1.5 wk old pups anyway? (Born 5th May) All seem to be putting on weight nicely and seem very healthy otherwise. Eyes starting to open, and all learning to walk on all 4's at the mo!
Thanks

Does the poo seemed to have changed since the antibiotics were given?  Generally I find their poo quite soft at this stage.  If mum isn't clearing up as much as she was that might be why you have noticed it.  If you are worried I would ring your vet as they may wish to see a sample.  I wouldn't home dose puppies at this age, if the breeder of your bitch or the stud dog owner is local they may be able to reassure you.

A little runnier than before the antibiotics I think. They all seem very contented and I keep checking for dehydration. One of the pups on day 8, actually went to mums water bowl and had a slurp. I was semi expecting it to nose dive in it! Would it be worth putting a small jam jar lid in the whelping box to see if they drink? Or is that simply a daft idea?? Booked in a vets on Monday for mastitis check up, but will see how it goes. Thanks for replying

Toothpaste consistency is normal puppy poo.  If Mum has had AB's then slighly looser ones are common.
