Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / puppies eating mums food!!
- By ratty6666 [es] Date 13.05.08 12:23 UTC
ok, so i leave mums food in her whelping room with pups and water, but now pups are 4 weeks old and running and playing, they are eating her food....

yes she is on royal canin puppy food, but it is different to the pups food, mum has 2month-10month pup food with canned food for digestion problems, vert recomended was good as she had diareah alot with calcium tables.

pups are on 5 meals of weaning dry royal canin with water.... but they are still going to mums dinner and eating in between, is this ok. should i take it away and feed mum seperatley not leaving it for her to nibble when wanted....

thanks in advance

My opinion only: I would not worry as long as they are not getting the calcium

Mum should be free to come and go from the pups - a barrier across the doorway that she can jump, but contains the pups, is fine - so her food can be outside the whelping room but only she can get it. :-)

i tried putting  a barrier at the door, but she wont jump in, shes only got small legs and bog boobs...
so i tried lowering it but the pups can escape too....
i leave the door open at and just keep puting pups back when they wander too far...

but my main worry was that the food would be too rich for them...

I wouldn't ever leave mums food within reach of pups.  Bitches are often very hungry at this time and could actually attack a puppy for eating her food. I haven't had it happen but I don't leave the two in same place BUT I have read it.

Even when weaning pups, they get access to the food but the mother doesnt. What isnt' eaten is lifted before mother has access back through.

Simple take bitch out of the whelping room for her meals, which you can feed the same times as pups are getting there's.

I always have Mum and pups on the same food, which means that she can eat their leftovers.  Bitches can get quite annoyed if a pup is trying to eat her food.  At this stage I stop feeding her in the whelping box.
