What size/breed of dog.. how much physical activity does he do a day? (why don't dog people do as horse people do and feed to work?)..
Rough set of examples.
9 Month old Deerhound bitch - light elegant version of her breed..
1 meal = block and a quarter + egg/veg/rolled oats
8 year old 18" terrier x staff x ?? (chunky broad in the ribs hefty little fella)
1 meal = quarter of a block.
I go by how fat the dog is, or thin - so the terrier here is a bit porky, he can put on weight on fresh air and is a 'good doer'. The Deerhound is a pup and is still growing, and does a fair bit of hurtling about, and obviously is bigger, so she gets five times the meat he gets. (The terrier currently wouldnt hurtle if you put a rocket up his bum).
THere is somewhere a ratio for how much food the dog should have according to how much he should weigh, someone will know that cos Im too hot at the mo...
Otherwise, if your dog is a bit fat (ie you can feel more than a 'thin tshirt' covering over ribs, or has no visible waist, or wobbles, has a fat tummy (Especially on a bitch, wobbly boobs) or a lot of fat on the breast bone)... then feed a little less than you think he ought to need, by eye.
If you feel hes a little thin then feed a little more.
Keep a close eye on him for a couple of weeks and see if he is putting on or losing and adjust accordingly. If he is staying the same, but evidently feeling hungry, up the veggie content a bit or feed whole carrots/apples etc as snacks so he feels fuller without much in the way of extra calories.
