Well hi everyone.my dog  had a puppy 3 days ago.but she still goes in to her nesting mood n she will star panting i take her temperature and is normal 100.4.
is this a normal behavior for them to do this?this is my first time breeding my dog,i'm so confuse with her doing all this. what should i do this is driving me insane i keep feeling her abdomen,and i don't feel any bumps or see anything moving no more.
she only delivere one puppy we waited the whole hour or so for more puppies but nothing happen, second day nothing third day nothin.but she still will go to her nesting spot n panting too...
when woul she stop this???
i appreciate all your comments n answer or advises to this question please!!!

What you describe sounds like her uterus contracting, getting back to its' normal size. This can be as painful as the labour pains. This said, have you had her checked by your vet? If not I think it would be a good idea to have her looked at, just in case. Has she got any discharge? Greenish-black discharge can mean a dead pup is still in there. Don't want to scare you, it's probably just normal contractions, but have her checked just to be safe!

Hi Browny3, I would take her to the vets for a check up, with puppy too.
I always take mine to the the vet a couple of days after a litter, just to check mum over and to check puppy too.  She may have some 'after birth' or something still in her uterus so best to take her to your vets.

Well yeah i thought about her having something in there but just today she stop panting.
but she still nesting.
also i haven't notice any discharge yet...i will make her an appoinment to see the vet .

RSVP: is it normal for her not to eat her food she will eat milk ,eggs,cereal.
But i notice she develop diarreha, is this normal or not?

It is hard to say, but I would be more concerned if she refused EVERY food.
But then if has runny poo, I would get her checked over by the vet, just to re assure yourself that she is fine,

she hates car rides oh well .

Panting and restlessness can also be associated with Canine Eclampsia ( Milk fever).

Wow really is this bad?i'm not familiar with this is this really bad? sounds bad.
she is my first dog....

Eclampsia is shortage of Calcium in the blood, which will cause the heart to fail eventually. Signs to look for is stiff movements, shivers and trembling, and more or less any behaviour you wouldn't expect to see in your bitch. Veterinary treatment is then imperative, otherwise the bitch might die.

This (eclampsia) isn't very common, although every breeder should be aware of its' excistence, and allways on the lookout for sympthoms. Should eclampsia set in, it is most common when the bitch is having a large litter, and is in full lactation. I seriously don't think this is what has happened to your girl, as she would have been very ill by now. I rather think she's digging to relieve herself of the tension from having the uterus contract, and the pain it causes her. Try putting a warm towel on her tummy, and maybe a very gentle tummyrub when she's feeding her pup, as feeding will increase the contractions. Nature is wise, is it not?!

i will do that rub her tummy. next time she star nesting cuz i notice that she dosen't have any discharge of any color n she will not leave her puppy unnantended unless she has the urge to go poo or nesting wich she is doing this less times then before....
i'm so happy i found this website,and i think i will spay my bitch cuz i don't think i can see her like this again...

diarrhoea and digging/panting for up to a week is normal

Ellie did most of her panting and nesting in the weeks after the birth certainly! I think like others have said, it's normal to pant as the uterus contracts back to normal, and of course they still want a nest for the puppies. I'd fixed my whelping box so she couldn't dig it up in case of burying puppies, so she would come out of the box, dig up a sheet in the corner of the lounge, then go back to the puppies having satisfied the nesting urge for a bit!

It all sounds pretty normal to me. Again as said before the uterus is contracting back and as any human mother will tell you, this is rather uncomfortable! But at least we know why the pain is there, your bitch wont so will try to distract herself with digging/nesting. It'll calm down soon enough and she will settle into motherhood.

I shouldnt have thought it was pre-eclampsia as this usually happens with large litters and more often happens after a couple of weeks of demanding feeding by the pups. With just the one little singleton pup I dont think this would be a problem.

However do get your vet to come and check her just to make sure. Its always good to get the mum checked anyway and the vet can give the pup a once over too to check for any obvious abnormalities.

Sorry Brownie 3 i didnt mean to scare you over the 'might be' eclampsia.My friend had her chihuahua have this last week with her 4 new born pups, shes now lost her milk too, thats why it was fresh in my mind.

am glad i read this thread i was going to ask about the same thing..my girl had her pups on saturday and she's been panting alot the past few days also today she has been messing her whelping box up every 5 mins (or so it seems ha) we thought she was doing it because she wanted attention? as her box is in the dining room (my living room and dining room are attached) i put her in the back corner and have put a screen up infront to keep my other girl away..but she keeps barking and everytime i go over she has messed it up which worries me as im scared one of the pups gets stuck under the vet bedding..i have a heat mat in the box (which is 3 feet by 3 feet) as she's been panting alot i thought maybe she was getting too hot? but there's loads of room away from the heat mat which iv put under the bedding in the corner of the box..iv put her water dish just outside the box (iv also put gloucose powder in the water) but she wont get out of the box to drink even when she's panting heavy and looks like she's choking for a drink? so i keep going over and making her drink at least something... so after reading this thread am i right in thinking that panting and messing up the whelping box is normal???  how long would you say is normal for this to go on for? is ther any kind of pain relife i could give her if her tummy is contracting back and is painfull for her?...she's not shivering or shaking just panting quite heavy sometimes.. thanks for any advice you could give me on this as its really! worrying seeing her like this..

well Hi i'm glad you read this cuz my female dog just stop today.
she had her pupphy on april 30 n today is may 5..
so yeah i did offer some warm milk with little pices of her favorite bone on it n she love it .
and i slso give her a massage on her tummy.that seem to help  her.
