Hello, I have a gorgeous pug bitch who is nearly six month's old. until recently she has been a really easy puppy, now her hormones are kicking in she has decided she likes to bark . . . A lot!!! She barks at the telly, birds flying over, people, other dogs, cars, bikes the list is endless! She does it at home, in the garden and on walks! I'm not sure how I should be handling it (my previous dog was a quiet cocker!). I take her to ring craft classes and she has many doggy friends so she is very well socialized. She just goes "mad" if she sees anything! she love everybody she meets and just wants to play, She has never shown any signs of aggression.
I have tried giving her a tug on her lead and saying no, no effect. I've tried turning away or blocking her vision, no effect! I've tired shaking a tin at her (as on it's me or the dog) but she barked louder! I am considering squirting her with water but if i start doing this will i have to keep it up for a long time or can it just be used for a short period?
It's really becoming a problem as i have school age children and her barking and lunging is worrying some of their friends and children at the school gates.
Any advice would be gratefully received! Thanks Louise and Maud the pug!

Hello, I haven't any advice for you, just letting you know you're not alone :)

My breed is not supposed to bark or very rarely anyway...try telling Louis that!!! He's  7 months nearly

He is a proper little watchdog and it was funny at first, just the occassional woof if he heard something at night. Now he barks at the slightest noise sometimes, we just say shush, but he really thinks he's doing us a favour letting us know :)
He will also start to bark at everyday items that he sees regularly, but suddenly take a dislike to something eg. dustpan and bark at it until I take it away. The other day, after playing happily in the garden since we got him, he realised the handles on the wheel barrow were red and that was it, bark bark bark.

I did  let him bark once without telling him off thinking he would get fed up, but no, he just gave himself a sore throat!! Also I didn't want it to become a  habit

I'm sure someone can give you some tips soon, good luck

Colleen
