Hi
I really need some help choosing a dog as I am an allergy sufferer - eczema and asthma! I had a Yorkie up until two years ago and was not allergic to him. I miss him dearly and would like another dog but want a different breed. I know each dog is different and we were very lucky with him as he wasn't a 'typical' Yorkie but he did possess certain traits that were rather trying!! I found a website with info on dogs for allergy sufferers and found a breed I have fallen in love with - the Shichon. However, I think it might be a breed only found in the USA. Does anyone out there know of a dog suitable for an allergy sufferer; around the size of a toy dog but not yappy!

Please help as I am getting broody for a doggy!

i beleive poodles are good with people that have your problems as they don't shed their hair, and they come in toy.minature and standard so theres a size to suit everyone, could the shichon that you saw not be a cross of a shitzu and a bichon, as when they crossed the poodle with the labrador for blind people with allergy's they named it labradoodle, so that could be the same as your schichon as its not a breed i've ever heard of,

It would appear that if you can cope with a yorkie that has quite fine hair which usually triggers allergies then you may find you aer not as allergic to dogs as you may think. The best plan is to draw up a short list of breeds and then visit some breeders to see whether that breed does trigger a reaction in you.

Bichon Frise, Bolognese, Min. or toy poodle are some of the smaller breeds of dogs.

I don't know what cross that is in America but I presume it's a bichon crossed with something else. If you want a small cross breed why not try a rescue centre as there may be some cross poodles etc there or dogs that are good for allergy sufferers, you never know.

I hope you like some of the above breeds.

Good luck in your search.

Hi, I also know of a doctor that recommended cocker spaniels to asthma sufferers and I have to say it was successful - no problems at all so this may be worth a try. Personally I don't think you can go wrong with a poodle. Good luck

Hi Daisy
I used to be very allergic to any animal with fur as a child especially poodles. I have a cocker spaniel my second one. I took antihistamines before I went to see the first one we owned and kept taking them for the first few weeks we had her.Whether it was a coincidence and I have outgrown the allergy I don't know. I did the same when we first got Misty as we had a few months between the death of our first dog Mabel. My 19 year old son is also allergic to cats and male dogs, fortunately he is fine with most bitches .
Regards Sue
