Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Cocking a leg!!!

Puppyboy is 6 months old now. How soon before he cocks his leg? May sound stupid but,Does cocking the leg have anything to do with their testicles? Louis' havent come down yet so will this delay the leg cocking?
Thanx

Hi not sure what breed you have (not that it is really relavent) but at 6 months I would expect testicles to have dropped by now :)
Maybe have him checked over by your vet to make sure everything is ok.

As for cocking his leg, I wouldn't worry too much my male started cocking his leg when he reached about 10 months old, but sometimes he doesn't lazy boy!!
When males do start to cock their leg it can be annoying as they feel they have to mark every tree, lamp post, branch etc!!!

They're all different, some can take until 3 years or maybe more LOL whereas my "baby" boy first done it at 10 WEEKS (aaaargh).  Fortunately it's currently only a rare event .....

My other males have all done it a few times as fairly young pups (16-20 weeks) but not all the time until nearer to 9-12 months.  This is just a guide as there is no hard and fast rule.

regards, Teri

each dog is different, as posted ;)

one of my males, aged 21 months, still prefers to just drop down into a slight squat to pee, he will occasionally do a half-hearted leg cock

my older male cocked his leg from about 5 months, same breed

I would have thought there would be some sort of appearance of testes by now, maybe ask your breeder?

Yeah I agree it varies enormously, my Irish Setter puppy Rory is now 5 months old, but he's been cocking his leg since he was 10 weeks old. Mind you he only does it in our garden, when he wee's anywhere else, he still does that half squat thing. My old boy Bailey was nearly a year old before he did it.

I can wait forever for him to cock his leg if he will start marking!! ;) Takes long enough to get round the block now :)

As far as his testes are concerned, I posted about this a few weeks ago cos the vet wanted to castrate next month!!!

After lots of reading and good advice on here, I have decided to give him at least until hes a year old ( and over the last week there is the beginnings of a very slight bulge, so fingers crossed :) )

We were wondering this very same thing and our puppyboy is six months too.  OH was excited and proud to tell me that he performed like a big boy on his walk a few days ago.  :) He hasn't done when out with me though, must be a male thing.

I wouldn't worry about him not cocking his leg My boy was 1 on Thurs and still is showing no signs of cocking his leg. He just spreads all 4 legs out!

My dog was about 6 months before he started cocking his leg up, my freinds dog is a Airdale bitch and she loves to cock her leg up for a wee!!

My boy (castrated) is nearly three and has never cocked his leg! He squats, but I don't mind at all, wouldn't like him to be marking everything as we walk - embarrasing if the neighbours dustbins are out!  His Mum however does this squat thing with right leg held up high, pees on allsorts like this when out walking, bits of paper, mounds of grass, horse poo - anything really!  You would think Max would have picked up on it but he just seems to think it's a strange thing his Mum does!  Incidentally, one of her other female pups who a friend has cocks her leg too!

All dogs are different.  My JRT was cocking his leg full time by 4 months old yet I have in the past owned a dog that never cocked his leg.

Yep my 20 month old GSP bitch does the same!  :-O  No prizes for guessing which dog wears the trousers in my 'family'!

My boy Jack has never cocked his leg and he's nearly 3 years old.

tiger trys to cock his leg but he usualy ends up nearly falling over so now he just lifts his leg about 1cm off the floor! (he is a very small breed) :-)

My 13 month old is still squatting with a slight cocking of his leg. I really don't mind if he does continue to squat. However, yesterday he decided to lift his leg a bit higher and almost wee'd on my 13 1/2 year olds head. He will get his bits chewed off if he tries that one again!!!
