recently lost my schnauzer when i got her back her id tag and microchip tag had been removed, what do you all put on your id tags ?? many thanx
It says that it should have the owner's name, address and telephone number. Never the dogs name because it makes it easier for thieves and IMO I think that the address and number is just as good for thieves if they wanted to hold the dog to ransom, it has been done.
My two wear ID tags with a freephone number on (I've got it through Petback) and when found they ring that number where they will then notify me. It doesn't have the dogs name, your name, number or address on. Although I've had to make £36 monthly for twelve months for both of mine it is a one-off payment and covers them for life. The cover I've got has also got their DNA on file matching it to my name so in a court of law if someone else was claiming it was their dog then I can prove differently, and it's the only way you can in court! Even if you have puppy pictures, it won't stand.
So I recommend going for a Petback MedALert tag or something along those lines where your details are hidden but Petback know them all. Each tag has an individual ID number that corresponds to your dog. I think the Dogs Trust also do something along these lines when they rehome dogs.
personally I believe a post code and mobile tel nu should suffice, perhaps your name too.
I know it's a legal requirement for dogs to wear id tags, but please bear in mind if someone saw your dog or found it it might lead them straight to your house for other nefarious reasons
also consider a medical statement or neutering info
it's a sad society where you have to think of worst case scenarios all the time :(

Address, home and mobile number. Mine is also microchipped and has tatoo. I've not heard of MC being removed before, they must have been determined.
edited: whoops just re-read that. My dog has lost tags before because they have been caught up in undergrowth or suchlike. I know this because one time the bent and mangled ring that holds the tag was still dangling from the collar. Are you sure this didn't happen to your dog's tags?
Isn't it difficult to type when your dog insists on resting their head on one of your hands?

I've heard of them being removed but I don't want to think about how it was done :-(
My lot have address, 2 phone numbers, 'microchipped' (River has a special tag for that) and 'neutered' on theirs, to put off any would-be breeders. The older 3 are also tattooed, as River will be when I've got £20 spare!

Mine both wear two tags each containing house number, postcode, mobile and home telephone number on one side and the other side states they are microchipped and has their Dogs Trust ID number on it as well.
I always use two tags now as have lost several in the past and hopefully one would stay on the collar even if the other one came off.

As far as I'm aware, by law it states you must have your house number and postcode( not your full address )and a contact telephone number as legal requirements.
Anything else you choose to put on the tag is up to the individual . I personally put on my surname but would never put my dog's name for obvious reasons.
I do have a tag to say my dogs are chipped but I wonder sometimes if this is a good idea as thieves have been known to remove microchips from dogs they have stolen to stop them being traced so why advertise to them they are chipped?. Also when lost dogs are handed in to a vets/police station/rescue centre they are scanned to see if they are microchipped and can find the owner from the chip info so no need for any other information other than whats stated by law.
mine have mine and rich's name, our address (1st line, town and postcode), our landline number, both our mobiles, the vets number and " **i am chipped** ".
> I've not heard of MC being removed before, they must have been determined.
The OP wrote the MC
tag not the chip.
My dogs have a tag from both the tattoo register & the chip company, plus the Missing Pet brueau tag & a large single tag with the leagal required stuff-my surname, first line of address, village, postcode & mobile number & then on the back the tattoo & chip number plus the contact numbers for them
Needless to say they are tattooed & chipped of course(with very very readable tattoos)
>by law it states you must have your house number and postcode( not your full address )and a contact telephone number as legal requirements.
To be strictly accurate the law
(Control of Dogs Order 1992) says:
every dog while in a highway or in a place of public resort shall wear a collar with the name and address of the owner inscribed on the collar or on a plate or badge attached to it.
So the owner's name and address is compulsory, as is a collar, not a tag attached to a harness.
>The OP wrote the MC tag not the chip.
That's why I edited my post after a re-read the OP. Sorry I didn't make that clear.

My dogs have our surname on, address, mobile numbers (we were told not to do house number as if they have your address they could ring the house to see if you are out, not a good thing!) and it also says "I am microchipped" as either a help to get them back to us or a deterrent to anyone who might be after stealing them!

We walk Louis on a harness but he has a collar with the tag on on as well ( lead attached to harness ). We haven't put the mc tag on just our door no, post code and phone no. Looks like we'll have to get another tag :(

our pups disc says ...I am neutered and then just 2 contact telphone numbers .
They don't need to know any thing else .
Just curious-why would you need to put the dog was neutered on a tag?? And also i can see why you would put that your dog is microchipped but i thought all vets surgerys, dog wardens, rspca etc scanned for m.c's now as common practise?
I have my name, adress, landline & mobile numbers on his tag which is on his collar at all times. he is also microchipped.
> our pups disc says ...I am neutered and then just 2 contact telphone numbers .
> They don't need to know any thing else .
I't's not a case of what they need to know but what the law requires to be there, my dogs are tattooed & that is a visble ID shouldn't need anything else, but the law states otherwise & if you do the KCGC awards you will fail if the dog tag doesn't comply with the law
> Just curious-why would you need to put the dog was neutered on a tag??
So he wont be stolen for breeding
>So he wont be stolen for breeding
With a dog if they're close enough to hold his collar and read a tag they're close enough to notice that he's been castrated! ;-) A bitch is different though.
But your name and address is still a legal requirement.
yes i had to pay to get her back hence lost collar, i appreciate all your advice mnay tanks for replys..
just reordered her identichip tags arrived yesterday afternoon, will also get another name address tag also.

mine has 2 discs on the collar - 1 states my surname and mobile number and the other says microchipped and spayed. My dog has her name on the collar in big diamante letters but because she is such a pain I figure anyone who stole her by calling her name would give her back sharpish! She is very people oriented and would go to anyone regardless of whether they called her name or not.

Mine hates anything dangly on her collar! I have her name and my mobile number embroidered on her collar. She is also microchipped. A friend has her vets number on the tag I noticed.

I have on side 1, surname, address and phone no. and on side 2, ID chipped and vets phone no.
My two have my home telephone number one side and the vet's number the other side there isn't room for anything else as they are small tags as the dogs are toy poodles. They are also microchipped.

I have my Surname on one side and my mobile number on the other and thats it.
As I always have my phone on me, I would always get the call!!!
As happened a few weeks ago when the gates blew open in the night and both dogs got out, I got a call asking if I had a doberman :o Nope but a Rottie, and she was about 20 house down the road!!!
I refuse to put my address on them, but thats for other reasons, than thefts!!
Lea :)

I have on one side my kennel name (it's shorter and easier than my surname), my full address with post code, and home tel No.
On the other side it says "I am micro chipped and tattooed please contact Petlog and NDTR"
I never understand the worry people have over including their address. Why would having it on the dogs tag make you any more likely to be burgled that if it is not? A house is burgled because it gives the burglar an opportunity (windows left open etc, or because it has been picked as a target for some reason. If it is because they might choose to steal your dogs, this can happen anyway.
As a not infrequent finder of loose dogs I tis a real pain when there is no address, as it means I have to walk home in order to try and make contact with the owner, who is likely out looking for the dog or at work if it has escaped. When having the address I have been able to walk it home and either give it to owner or a neighbour until the owner returns home.
> Mine hates anything dangly on her collar!
I am a cruel mummy as I like to have two danglies (tag and chip tag) on my lot's collars, so I can always hear where they are.

I've never understood this either Barbara. It's not like the house has a cloaking device that makes it invisible without the address in your hand. I too have found a stray dog I could take home if it had tags on. I have my name, full address, home number, mobile number and "I'm microchipped, scan me" on my tags (2 -sided). If, heaven forbid, my dogs got separated from me I want to have the best chance of getting them back home safe. If for some very bizarre reason someone broke into my house because they saw my dog out on a walk (strange people don't get the chance to read their tags) then so be it. I'd rather lose a tele than my dog.
The law is another aspect. The fines in my county are up to £5000 if your dog is out in public without tags that have your name and full address (not just postcode and house number).

>I've never understood this either Barbara.
Me neither :-D I got followed by a Border Collie once when walking my dog. I hoped he would turn round and go back the other way but as we headed towards the main road I eventually coaxed him towards me and got hold of his collar. I then had to shout to someone in their driveway for help. He went inside and tried to phone the number umpteen times but got no response. I must have stood there for at least an hour. He then finally got an answer - they'd been out looking for the dog and only lived about 10 minutes away! He'd cut through a couple of alleyways so they were looking in the wrong area. I could have walked him straight back if he'd had an address.
I also don't understand about not putting the dogs name on the tag - surely if someone is close enough to read the tag then they're close enough to get hold of the dog anyway? Or is the idea that they're making a mental note of the name to call the dog later on? I've found that most people that come up to say hello ask what the dog's name is anyway regardless of the info on the tag - do people just say 'Fido' or something then? :-P

When having the address I have been able to walk it home I had not thought about that - it really makes sense. However putting our
full address on a tag would take a pretty big tag. I never use the county name anyway just post code.
By Lori

I stopped putting their names on the tag just so they're interchangeable between dogs. It's not like the dogs would really know if they wore each other's tags but I would. Knowing their name wouldn't matter much either way to them. Or I could just put Caoimhe's name on all the tags and watch people sweat but no one has ever tried to read her tags before. :)
By full address I mean house number and street name (city and post code too) not just house number and postcode. Not many walkers would know what my post code was but might know where my street was. I don't bother with the county either.

I always struggle to understand the logic of not having your dog's name on a tag because it makes it easier for thieves?
How?
Are they imbued with superpowers in the vision department so that they can zoom in on your pet's ID tag (even if it is facing the wrong way) and then call it and your dog will go to them?
If your dog is friendly it will go off with anyone regardless, if it is not, it will not matter if they know your dog's name, address, telephone number, mum and dad and its favourite food!
DOG ID tags must have name and address of owner; period; anything else is an optional extra; if you are paranoid about being burgled put house name/number and post code. Just remember WHY it exists and for what purpose, the more difficult you make it for villains, the more difficult you make it for it to be returned by the innocent.

my boys have those flat tags attached to their collars (rather than dangly ones because of agility) , on it they have their name, my surname, my house number, street and postcode (no point having my village name, if they are found out of the village chances are the person wont return them anyway) there is my mobile number and landline number. It also says on there "microchipped, tatooed and DNA profiled" to deter any would be thieves (although any thieves would soon return the little sods !!)

My dog's id doesn't have her name and although she recognises her name under all tones of voice she also appears to nicknames if they are said affectionately such as Poochy, Pow Wow, Pal, Bootiful and my favourite - Where's that dog? She's wary of all strangers but offer her something tasty and she's your bosom buddy.

On my dogs tags, it has my phone number and says 'Microchipped' .
I don't like putting their names on the tags as stated in other posts, if someone finds / steals my dogs they will know their names and keep them (god forbid)
I think it is very important to have tags on dogs, alot of dogs I have found don't have tags on them which makes me cross as it would save alot of time if the dog had a tag on with a phone number! instead of the poor thing having to be put in kennels by a dog warden.
>I don't like putting their names on the tags as stated in other posts, if someone finds / steals my dogs they will know their names and keep them (god forbid)
if someone is going to keep your dog then they will keep them, regardless of whether they know their name, rescue dogs get given new names and learn them quickly. If my dogs were found by someone I would rather they knew their name, at least the dogs will have something familiar.
Only having your postcode on a tag doesnt really make too much difference. If having a postcode on will help lead someone back to you with your pet it will also lead burglars. A Sat Nav or simple postcode search online would lead someone straight to your house.

me neither. I was amazed that none of the pups in puppy class ( and some are over 6 months old ) had ID tags on their collar when they first came to class, and one gave this excuse about not including the address. They said the engraver told them so. So I tld them who do they trust more their dog trainers or their engraver? If anything you would be less likely to be burgled if you are known to have a dog!
I have the full name of my dog with the surname and preceeded by Miss or Master. Then the address, post code, phone no and ( m.chip ). I now some people don't like to add the name of the dog but mine will respond very nicely to anything accompanied with food. I once saw a lady shout 'sausage' to get her dog to come back and she instantly had over 6 dogs running to her side.
I once lost the dog collar ( lord knows how ) but because it had a tag it was returned to me...which was good cos they are not cheap!
On holiday I make up a plastic tag with my local holiday contact details and add it to the collar.
