Hi all,

We're taking our two BARF fed hounds away for a breed fun Weekend in August and I'm looking for advice as to an alternative that I can feed them on whilst we're there.

They're fed twice a day and we will be leaving Friday Lunchtime and coming home on Sunday night so it won't be practical to take their usual raw bones, tripe etc. We'll be travelling from Scotland to the Birmingham area so quite a trek and the car will get hot even with the climate control on. I want to stick to as natural a product that is fairly light on the tummy as possible but also get something that won't go off.

I've spoken to others that are going but their dogs are fed on dry so it's not a problem for them. Mine aren't at all fussy, quite the opposite but I have a suspicion that if they were ever fed on dry they would very quickly go off the idea.

I haven't researched anything yet but I'm sure that there must be some good advice and recommendations from some of you who have done similar :)

How about Nature's Harvest - a moist food that comes in a 400g tray with a peelable lid.  You can store it in a cupboard and it only needs to be refrigerated once open if you don't use it all.  Comes in lamb, chicken or fish; brown rice, veg, seaweed, fish oiil, glucosamine chronditin.  Pets at Home stock it - about 77p a whack.  No artificial colourings.

I feed BARF but ALSO share one tub of this a day between my two - just so that I have an alternative for when I go away or visit the ageing mother who doesn't appreciate chicken carcasses etc knocking about her kitchen!  :-)

When I've gone away I've packed a cool bag with bottles of frozen water and some frozen meat for the next day (also gives you home water) and put frozen meat in a container for the first night as it's defrosted by the time you get there. Then gone onto tinned pilchards and Nature Diet for the remaining meals

Nature Diet/Natures Menu/Natures Harvest :)  all PAH stocked and as natural as a moist complete gets IMO.  Passes the Terv terror Test so hey, gotta be a good bet for the French Fiends too :)

Like the others I've taken frozen raw chicken for an overnight stop - they can have it still frozen anyway (try stopping them LOL) or slowly defrosted in the cool bag the next day.  Likewise minced meat (wouldn't recommend taking tripe in the cool bag - don't think Cal's tummy would be the only one heaving :-D )

I'd also check out on the sat nav or good old AA route planner if there's a supermarket nearby the venue - that way you can dispense with the cool bag except for drinks (human and doggy) and have the pre-packed moist foods as a standby.

I knew somewhere in the back of my befuddled mind that there was a suitable alternative but couldn't as usual...going senile you know... remember it.

Although they love fish - with two heavily bearded monsters it probably wouldn't be the best idea on a hot? Weekend and if we did, I have a feeling that we would grow a very large space around us, no friends - except flies - and would court the attention of the less desirable members of the canine community :-o

Teri *waves* I might take a couple of chicken carcasses for the first night - you're so right re the tripe what's the 'ickle green icon for chunder? lol OH thinks that tripe would be perfect on first night as it would let them settle upon checking in - yeah.....right.... and I've a feeling that everyone in the B&B would be checking out as well

We use Nature's Harvest or Naturediet as a BARF alternative too and the dogs are fine with it, even my Newf who can be a bit picky about her grub.  They also like the fish or tripe varieties of Wainwrights wet food from PAH but, IMO, the other two are slightly better quality.

Ours are also BARF fed and we feed NatureDiet when we go away.
