Topic Dog Boards / Health / Puppy Lameness...worse

Hy I wrote before regarding my new Golden pup being lame, horribly lame, front elbow and right hind. She is just 5 months old. The Vets have her on anti inflammatories and has had an injection, due back next week. She cannot make the smallest slip or turn without going horribly lame. Cannot be walked, has to rest, cannot go out in the wet as the smallest slip that any other would take as just what it is, a slip, maybe 2 inches of slip as dogs do when they twist around on the grass.

I have had OCD in my life, I have has HD but I have never had lameness like this. Vet wants to see her early next week if no improvement, which I know there won't be. I feel its an old injury (she used to live with an older big male pup)

Has ANYONE had such frailty, she is the gentlest and sweetest girl with great conformation and in great condition. Its awful, just awful. Thanks in advance

Golden Lady..

Oh my word you poor thing. I too, have Goldens and know that they can play really quite roughly with the youngsters. But I haven't had lameness of the type you describe, so can't help at all.
But I am going to watch these posts and send you lots of good wishes and I am sure others will be able to send support too. There is always the hope that things will resolve and she will be fine.

Thank you Kate, I am really down at the moment as she is the sweetest little thing ever. So gentle. I can't make plans for anything, not even the smallest walk. She is left behind all the time. Its heartbreaking I have had so much illness with my dogs for 6 consequetive months and this is unbeleivable bad luck and I beleive deception on the previous owners part.

I know that feeling. It's horrible when you're so worried about one of the dogs. But do try and be optimistic, it may well turn out to be better than you think. There's always hope.

What deception then? Sounds as though you've had an awful time.

> Has ANYONE had such frailty,

My pup went lame at 5 months old, he got worse & worse, it turned out to elbow displasia but it seemed to effect his back legs to (they were x-rayed - nothing wrong with them). He could hardly walk 4 yards :(
He was on Metacam and every day I took him out for a walk. To start with he only went a few steps and we didn't get much further than the end of our small front garden, but slowly it was increased. He is now 9 months old and he rarely limps atall (if he does limp it is so slight that somebody who didn't know he had the ED wouldn't be able to see it). At the begining of the year he couldn't walk from the kitchen to the garden, now he goes on a 30 min walk every day on a long line!!!! He has improved so much that an opperation for the elbow displasia is something that is not on the cards in the near future :)

Glucosamine has also helped loads.

I'm not trying to say your pup has ED, just that at 5 months old they still have so much growing to do it is amazing the improvements they can have as they get more muscle & get stronger with controlled exercise.

I really hope you get to the bottom of it soon. I know how heartbreaking it is to see a puppy that can hardly walk :( But I have 1st hand experience of a puppy going from 'can't walk' to 'try & stop me'!!!! :)

Best case scenario would be if it turns out to be panosteitis (sometimes called wandering lameness or growing pains) as this is an inflammatory condition of the bone membranes and is outgrown with no lasting ill effects.

Fingers crossed that it isn't OCD or HD or both.
