Scotland's gone totally mad!!  Packed dog in car last night to go to ringcraft (20 miles away).  There were cars out the door at the first petrol station, so went onto next, closed, no fuel left.  What happened to not panic buying??  My fuel light was on, so had no choice but to get fuel.  We don't even know if this strike is even going to happen!   Yes, I'm going to conserve my fuel and not do unecessary journeys (looks like no dog show this weekend!), but I need my car for work.  No fuel, no work.  This is going to apply to many people!

I know it is crazy but apparently one problem is they have started to shut down the process which includes the machines in the plant as it isn't just a switch  off job. Must take a day or two to shut it down it seems. Although this also could be exagerated hype and just be adding to the fuel ( Pardon the pun :-D )

Will need to get the exact name so I can name and shame BUT a garage this morning is charging £1.45 for fuel in Kirkcaldy.

The last person who did that in Thornton found themselves out of business :-)

My local BP was £119.9 this morning.   Greed really.
- By belgian bonkers Date 23.04.08 09:49 UTC
That's crazy!  I begrudged £1.12 last night!  They reckon if they do a total shutdown it will take a month to get back to normal.  I wonder if it's just scaremongering, as they will lose horrific amounts of money too!  The thing is, if they do go ahead with this, what's going to happen to food supplies etc?  The next problem will be people panic buying food and supplies!

Sarah.
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 23.04.08 10:11 UTC
I think that they are just scaremongering to make us pay even more than we already are.  I'm sorry but we the GP need to stand up and stop them doing this to us.  Why are we paying more than nearly any other country?  Why because we sit on our backsides and complain but do nothing about it.
- By Blue Date 23.04.08 10:18 UTC
perrodeagua lead the way and we will follow :-)
- By Freds Mum [gb] Date 23.04.08 10:46 UTC
I cant quite remember but i read an e mail a while back that was saying if everone boycotted one petrol station(not sure if im allowed to name it) for a really short time-like a day or a week, then it would have a huge effect and petrol prices would drop.
Anyone remeber reaing something like that?!
Everyone panic buying is having the opposite effect!!
- By Paula20380 [gb] Date 23.04.08 11:54 UTC
Apparently they are in talks this morning so that will determine whether they strike or not.:-(
- By Dakkobear [gb] Date 23.04.08 12:34 UTC
They've caused this panic by saying there will be shortages. I can't believe that one refinery closing down for a week can cause shortages. Surely they can ship it from other places? Don't they have whole tanks of the stuff in reserve? God help us if the place has to shut done due to a fault because we'll all be at a standstill in a week it seems. I'm sure that its a ploy to get us all on the side of the company against workers who feel they need to strike to be listened to, lets face it no one goes on strike lightly nowadays, they can't afford the loss of wages!
- By judgedredd [gb] Date 23.04.08 13:59 UTC
Sarah, you are only paying £1.12 for fuel you lucky thing
i have been paying for weeks 1.14 sometime upto 1.16 for fuel, i have had to cut back on training
and looking at my agility shows that have two or three days so i can camp,

- By belgian bonkers Date 23.04.08 14:48 UTC
OMG!  Until yesterday it was £1.09 locally, but if i got petrol in Keith, where I go to training it was £1.03!!  I'm going to be cutting back big time from now on.  We already car share to some shows, so that saves a bit.  Lets hope they've sorted things out.

Sarah.
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 23.04.08 17:02 UTC
£1.09, it hasn't been that here for about a year!
- By lumphy [gb] Date 23.04.08 19:42 UTC
This has been a eye opener at work today. The two ladies I work with were ranting about this subject. One of them doesnt own a car but has started to fill her freezer just in case of a food shortage. The other one has two cars and cannot imagine life without hers. She doesnt need it for work as she walks every day. Her hubby works locally also so could catch a bus as the route passes the front door to his office. She only really needs it for socialising and taking kids to their various activities. But the pair of them are getting in a right tizz about it all.

I dont drive but my oh is self employed and really does need the car to work. Today he has filled up the car as a precauction becauce of all the panic buying. But it really seems to be going over the top. People are putting a couple of pounds worth in at a time just to keep the tank full.

Well, looks like the talks have broken down and the strike is going ahead on Sunday and Monday.  I have ordered more dog and cat food just to be on the safe side and still have a just about full tank of petrol. It will be interesting to see what happens.
Apparently if you live south of Aberdeen, stocks of fuel are OK.  North of Aberdeen (where we are!) are getting very limited deliveries.
- By briedog [gb] Date 24.04.08 07:20 UTC
i cannot belive this is happeing again, i out showing a puppy again this year, this happen to me in 2000/2001 when i was showing brie, petrol stike.foot/mouth this is a repeat of back then,

- By belgian bonkers Date 24.04.08 07:58 UTC

- By tadog [gb] Date 24.04.08 09:32 UTC
well! I have just been to my local garage and they are closed!
- By tadog [gb] Date 24.04.08 09:33 UTC
P.S     I AM 60 miles south of aberdeen.
- By belgian bonkers Date 24.04.08 12:16 UTC
I consider myself v. lucky!!  Delivery at local garage, so have just topped up(everyone's doing the same). It's amazing how much you actually use when you're watching the fuel! Non essential journeys i.e. just work, I've used £11 in 2 days!!

Things are crazy indeed. All petrol stations in my area are out of fuel just now and the customers were arguing at one station becuse a few selfish ones were filling their cars and countless jerry cans!
- By belgian bonkers Date 24.04.08 16:01 UTC
No filling up of jerry cans allowed here thank goodness!
- By Paula20380 [gb] Date 24.04.08 17:16 UTC
I understand they are shipping fuel in from other refinerys so hopefully shouldn't be out of fuel for too long. But that is just how I understand it.
- By suz1985 [gb] Date 24.04.08 18:38 UTC
i think i heard somewhere that asda done use grangemouth so they should contine to have fuel ( as long as people dont panic buy) problem is, im £30 a week petrol to get to work, and i would really struggle with public transport. i live in middle of nowhere, no buses and about 10miles to nearest train station.
- By belgian bonkers Date 24.04.08 18:55 UTC
Our nearest Asda is a 70mile round trip, so that's out.  I'm like you with the public transport situation.  Hope they get sorted out soon, though with the time it's going to take to get Grangemouth up and running again, the country's bound to suffer.
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 24.04.08 19:14 UTC
Don't forget for those of you who work for the NHS or other such like jobs there is usually a way around this.  Most petrol stations have reserves and when we had this problem a few years back we just showed our hospital passes and we were able to get petrol.

Sorry not much help for any of you that isn't in the NHS, police service, army, fire service etc.!!
- By belgian bonkers Date 24.04.08 19:28 UTC
That's handy, and v. necessary.  Doesn't help most of us though.
- By briedog [gb] Date 24.04.08 20:25 UTC

I'm in North Wales and today i had a shock as diesel was 1.23 a litre
- By ChristineW Date 24.04.08 21:40 UTC
We're ranging (Around Dundee) from Sainsbury's at 113.9 a litre to 118.9 at petrol station in outlying areas.  There was a comment on Radio 2 his afternoon, that people in the USA are up in arms at having to pay just over 50p ($ equivalent) a litre for their fuel - oh how I wish!
- By Paula20380 [gb] Date 24.04.08 21:53 UTC
In Scarborough everyone is around 118.9 diesel and 108.9 petrol.
- By ChristineW Date 24.04.08 22:09 UTC
Sorry I should've added thats diesel prices I was quoting!
- By jennyb59 [gb] Date 24.04.08 23:01 UTC
Thats still cheaper than down here, cheapest Ive found locally to Brighton was 116.9 for diesel cost me £70.00 to fill my van up, got three shows entered one at Malvern area, Birmingham Nat and another in Keysoe, Beds......Malvern and Stafford will be a tank full, the other one probably over half a tank......just as we get off of IBR..not sure if I can keep affording this and Im sure many of you are in the same boat....!!!!!
Paid 123.9 on the motorway on Sunday just put enough in to get me home.....

Dont seem to be any problems with shortages down here tho......
- By MADDOG [gb] Date 25.04.08 07:11 UTC
Dont seem to be any problems with shortages down here tho......

Oh give it time, panic buyers will start even though it's not effecting us & then they won't get the tankers down south.

Nice to see something's cheap in Brighton for a change ;-)

Better get on, walking to school to reduce my fuel consumption (it's my new term resolution - kids are enjoying it (so far) & dogs are just loving it ;-) )
- By copper_girl [gb] Date 25.04.08 15:11 UTC
Just got back from holidays and Edinburgh has gone crazy.  Shell garages have sold out!!  Morrisons have got petrol and I got some today but they don't appear to be advertising the price so I don't know what I paid.  I had to queue for 20 mins though.  I'm ashamed to say I put in £25 instead of my usual tenner but I think I almost got the same amount of fuel :(  People are panic buying and the media are making it worse (see today's daily mail :o)

- By belgian bonkers Date 25.04.08 15:28 UTC
The second the media say "Don't panic buy", what do people do?  Of course they're going to panic buy!!  Not quite so mad up here in the wilds today.  One of the petrol stations does seem to be getting regular fuel for now, so panicking has stopped.
- By Paula20380 [gb] Date 25.04.08 16:50 UTC
Well we're in Scarborough and the minute the radio said "the government are asking people not to panic buy" all the forecourts filled up.
- By Ems Mum [gb] Date 25.04.08 18:41 UTC
We live about 5 mns from Grangemouth & the garages round her are starting to close through having no fuel. Just put the usual in my tank but starting to wonder about getting to work once that runs out. Ah well - may get a few lie-ins!!!
- By DEARLADY [gb] Date 26.04.08 10:45 UTC
I had to fill up in Malvern yesterday - £92 in diesel to fill up - I recall it was about £1.22 litre/gallon (I can never remember)
last time I filled up in Scunthorpe it cost me £85 so not a huge difference...though it's gone up in total £10 since I bought the van in 2007

that should last around 700miles, and I did 234 on the way home yest so still got 500ish left in the van, my car is about 1/2 tank full so I guess I'll be ok for a while, wait to see if it hits us in North Lincolnshire

I remember when there were protests at the thought of paying over 99p for petrol or diesel....
- By peanuts [gb] Date 27.04.08 12:58 UTC
Our local has gone up again 3p in 2 days , it's now £1.22.9, ithink it's about time the general public went on strike.
If everybody in the country said right on monday i am not going to work the country would come to a standstill and maybe the goverment would take some tax off.
I know i can dream !!

Peanuts
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 27.04.08 14:47 UTC
Totally agree with you peanut, we really have to do something!!
- By newf3 [gb] Date 27.04.08 18:57 UTC
couldnt agree with you more peanut,
its about time the govenment did something about the taxs on fuel as they are able to step in on other matters, such as putting pressure on the bank of england to cut the bank rates and help the banks with morgages etc so why not help to sort out the fuel tax.
