Topic Dog Boards / General / Neutering?

Hi there,

I have two CKCS who are ages 6 and 4. Over the last month or so the younger of the two has got really bad at trying to hump the other one. My Husband and I have decided to get them both neutered and they're going for this of Friday. I just wondered if anyone could tell me what to expect when they get home, will it take them long to recover? I hate the thought of sending them but I know that It's the best thing for them. Will they be in alot of pain? And just one more question, do you think that we can expect to see a difference quite quickly with the humping?

I'd be grateful for any advice

Carrie

Is this humping a recent thing? I ask because it can be a sign of an infection in the humpee - the vet's checked them both over to make sure they're fine?

As for how long it'll take them to recover - they'll be a bit groggy and sorry for themselves the day it's done, should be feeling more normal (but leg-cocking might be somewhat tentative!) the next day and pretty much normal the day after. Limit their exercise to lead walks, and don't let them bounce around the house and garden until their stitches are out.

Are they dogs or bitches?

Hi
i had my boy done last week he went in the morning ang i picked him up at 3.30 he was a little quiet that evening, by the next day he was pretty much back to normal, (pain in the butt LOL) however they do need to take it easy for a few days, i suppose the recovery can be different for all dogs a bit like humans, he is only a year old so that did help. I did worry before hand too but they will be fine.

Regarding the humping im not really sure!

mine didn't have any stiches to come out they were internal ones

Oh goodness, no one has checked either of them over. We were told that they would check them over and listen to their hearts ect before hand, but nothing else. I'll get my husband to ask before hand or give the vet a call tomorrow. I'm dreading it to be honest.

Thankyou for your reply

You might need some distraction training as well if it's becoming a habit, neutering doesn't always cure it completely. But I'm sure your boys will bounce back from the op no troubles. :-)

Think if this is new there may be a problem with the health of the one that has become the subject of this attention and I would advise checking this before taking any further steps to castrate them. It may be if there is a problem the vet will advise castrating the affected dog anyway.

Strangely it is usually the castrated male that becomes the attention of other dogs so it would seem for this to suddenly have started with two intact males something will be causing it. It should also be understood that castration may not stop it, the worst culprit in my home is a neutered bitch.

In Response to carrie76

You may find no difference to the humping after they are neutered, as more often than not it isn't about reproduction but status.  Your younger one has reached full social maturity and this is probably the reason for the humping, as he fancies movign up the socail ladder.

By having them both done your not changing their relative status in realtion to each other, so they will still be sorting their social status.

If this is the only reason for having them done I would not bother, especially as it is likely to have a very negative effect on their coats, which are likely to become very fluffy and difficult to groom.

I got my male Snoop neutered at 7 he's 9 now sailed through the op- but when the fancy takes him he will give my visiting friend's boxer Rodney a right seeing too he was neutered at 8 months!
Just my Snoop telling Rodney that he's the main man of the house.
