Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / my girl has developed a habit since shes been pregnant
- By deansami [gb] Date 17.04.08 10:17 UTC
please help, my girl has been doing this strange thing, she puts her head down slowly and she (what we think) grinds her teeth, then moves her whole forhead up and down, the vet says it could be a habbit, or epilepsy, however she seems to be (still with us)

she has only started this since she became pregnant, i keep worying so much,
is this normal behaviour?

please, please help.

How old is she?  Just wondering if the puppy habit off feeding from mum has been triggered during pregnancy?  Is she kneading with her paws at the same time?
- By deansami [gb] Date 17.04.08 17:59 UTC
no, she's nearly 2, shes been tested, and shes clear for all required tests, she would be around 3weks pregnant,

Did you phone the vet or take her in for a check over, was her mouth, ears checked thoroughly?  Does her face quiver whilst she does this too?

her mouth just grinds, its like shes chewing on one of her teeth, then she looks like she,s trying to discard of something out of her mouth, shes been seen by the vet, he checked for jaw disconection and grinding her teeth but he said theres no evidence of her grinding her teeth,

I have no answer????? I can't even really visualise what she is doing.

But dogs, don't start strange behaviours for no reason, keep checking her mouth and ears, and watching for any trembling or weakness, all I can say for definite is it has nothing to do with being in whelp, it is not a behaviour I have ever seen an in whelp bitch do.

Let us know if you get to the bottom of it, it's a puzzle.

Hi
Is she just not being a bit sick that she tries then swallow straight back down??? just a small possett that is tasting yuk.

My male used to do a funny thing when my bitch was in season, he'd sniff her and it would make his teeth chatter and his nose and face go into some twitching phase - the smell or taste seemed to be like he was eating lemon!! Could she be licking herself and keeping clean but its an odd taste/ smell???? have no idea really but just a thought,

:-D very apt way of describing the males, they sometimes look as though they are having a seizure don't they? My mum's male does the same when he gets overly excited seeing my cat on the wall too. :-)

Never seen a bitch do it though, I wish it could be recorded somehow for us to have a look.

i have recorded it, just not sure if i can show it on here and if im able to load it up on to this site, its strange, and she seems to do it more when we tel her not too. my partner was being quite loud last night and she started, it made me wonder if its an anxiety thing, maybe shes feeling her babies move and its making her anxious, as though its a weird feeling, i dont know like i say shes still with us whilst shes doing it, shes not fitting or atleast i dont think she is, the vet was trying to say that she could still be epileptic even though shes still with us????? i dont know:O

she dosent look ill however im worried that she is, weve been so excited to get our first litter and now were worried that weve done the wrong thing, im a little in denial

i know what you mean when the dogs pull funny faces, its defo not that

maybe shes feeling her babies move and its making her anxious

It takes 35 days for a dogs foetus to be even recognised as a pup, at 3 weeks she won't be feeling any movement of pups and they will be approx 1cm so I doubt it is anything to do with that. Hormones may be an effect, but again why would it make these strange movements? It may well be a sign of her still being epilectic. Just keep a close eye on her.

Also I'm not sure of what type of epilepsy your dog had/has but has she been on medication, what did your vet suggest about mating her with possible epilepsy, the risks etc, was any of that talked about?
- By zarah Date 19.04.08 19:46 UTC
I think the vet's only suggesting it might be epilepsy. She didn't do it before being in whelp by the sounds of it.

I think you can upload videos to both photobucket and flickr, deansami.

she only developed it after 2 weeks of being mated, she has never ever done it before this, shes been fine over the wekend and i have been off work, so i wonder if its an attention thing,

What about heartburn?  Do pregnant dogs get heartburn like pregnant women do sometimes?  I can imagine it might cause her to react that way, that hot, sour stuff coming up from the back of her throat.  I know my girlfriend did something similar and it only lasted a short time in her early pregnancy.
- By deansami [gb] Date 22.04.08 21:41 UTC
well i thought that but it was just strange for her to make that grining clicking nois, to be honest it was either her teeth grnding or her jaw, like i say its been ok so far touch wood,
