I have a 4 month old Mastiff who is only 55 pounds. He looks just like a great dane. He is all leg. I am feeding him Purina puppy. All the pictures I have seen of Mastiffs show a much bigger, thicker body. What am I doing wrong?

Hi Tiffiny, I suggest you change his food for a start. If he were mine, I would put hin on a Junior complete food, or tripe and biscuit. I know a lot of people dont like the later suggestion, but it is brilliant for putting on weight. Have you wormed him recently? If not do it straight away.
Some giants do go through a very leggy stage, but even so, a bit more weight would be better.

Can you not get in touch with the breeder of your dog and ask them what the weight should be and to suggest a food?

Hi Tiffany, we keep Mastiffs and can confirm that it is not uncommon for Mastiffs to look very much like a Great Dane when they are young, they can also be very fussy eaters. 55LBS for a 4 month old is a very acceptable and reasonable weight. We always feed our Mastiffs a combination of a complete dry food and tripe and touch wood they are all happy and healthy. The most important thing to remember with a Mastiff is not too put too much weight on a young dog too soon. They are a very slow maturing breed. A Mastiff should be large but not fat. We do have a specific Mastiff website and forum and if you would like to send me an email I'll gladly forward you the address.

Hello Tiffany
I have a bullmastiff and have done a lot of research on the breed!!
I have read at some points in them growing they do get a scooby doo look to them but that changes!!
Another option ref: changing food is that we use Ukanuba (iams) It is brill and our pup has benefited from it no end he is bright bubbly and his coat is lovely and soft!!!
Have you taken him to the vets?
Hope I have helped
Pinky
PS sorry did read other advise someone has already suggested great dane look!
