My retrievers have always loved to chew paper and it doesn't seem to get better with age. You're probably best getting one of those boxes/baskets to put over your letter box. As for her messing in the house, she is only 12 weeks and she is still very young, obviously not housetrained yet, how long do you leave her? Puppies can't hang on to wait for the toilet, they have to go when they have to go!
leave her from 7 till 12 hopefully get her out walking next week had last injection last wednesday.just don't want to do anything wrong with her as my first dog.

Agree that putting them up high and out of the way is best advice!

Five hours is a very long time to leave a puppy unattended - until they're housetrained they really need to be taken out into the garden every hour at least. Can you not get someone to come in and look after the pup in the morning for you?
As regards the chewing up of paper - puppies are very good at teaching us how to put things away safely! It really is a case of "if you don't want it chewed, don't leave it accessible".
where exactly are you leaving the pup when you are out? It sounds like she has too much freedom when unsupervised.

Hi,
First of all congratulations on your first puppy.:-)
Puppies and some adult dogs chew paper, it's perfectly normal and won't do them any harm. My daughters teacher didn't believe her once when she told her the dog chewed up her home work, I had to go into school and explain it was true. :-(
At 12 weeks 5 hours is a very long time to leave a puppy alone. They can not control thier bladder till about 16 weeks, so this is why you sre getting accidents. Depending on what food you are using they normal poo once after each of thier four feeds at this age. I advice new puppy owners not to leave puppy alone longer than two hours.
I use cage training, then you know your puppy is safe when you are out, to be used only at night and when you are out.:-)
Dogs don't understand what they can and can't chew until you teach them. Until then, anything is far game!
As others have said, the easy and quick way to stop him chewing thinsg is to make sure they aren't where he can get them. Also, if your daughter is colouring, make sure she does it at a table where he can't reach her.
I think you'll have problems toilet training a pup if he is left for 5 hours a day (or even some days). He isn't yet old enough to hold on for that long, and the more times he toilets in the house, the more likely he is to learn that it is OK to toilet there, especially if the number of times he toilets in the house are equal to, or almost equal to the number of times he toilets in any other single area. Think o fit liek toilte training a child, you wouldn't expect to take their nappy off and for them to know to suddenly use the toilet and even when they had been dry a whole day, you wouldn't expect them to be dry the next really.
I think having someone to sit in with him is going to be the best option. Or at least sitting in with him for part of the time you are out. You can pay a professional to do this if you don't know anyone. Also, as others have said, confining him to a small, easy to clean area like a kitchen, if you haven't already.
thank you for your advice will get someone to dog sit.

Hi
Think your puppy is far too young to be left that long on his own, he's only a baby. All puppies chew and rip things up but he is probably lonely, bored and mischievous.
Try and see if a friend will have him for a few hours whilst you are at work.
Mess and chewing just go hand in hand with Puppies Im afraid, my 11mnth old who is usually good thought it would be a good idea to trash the bathroom when he was left for an hour last week.
He can now open doors! Other half hadnt put the baby gate on properly and when I returned we had 8 shredded toilet rolls, 2 tubes toothpaste up the walls, half eaten toothbrushes, the bathroom shelf had been pulled up with all razors on the floor ( so lucky he hadnt cut himself) and a full pack of bottled water punctured on kitchen floor with bits of toilet roll sitting in it!
I have to admit I didnt tell him off, I was just relieved he hadnt cut himself with the razors, that door now has a bolt on it!
