I decided to try Ollie with some tripe (not that he refuses anything that is remotely edible) and went to my local market. There is only one stall that sells the stuff, but they didnt sell green tripe, the only two they had was the bleached stuff and black tripe. I bought some of the black stuff (yuk) and he had a bit last night and a bit this morning (needless to say he wolfed it down).
Here come the questions;
Is the black tripe what has previously been described on the forum as bible tripe?
Am I giving him the wrong one?
Should I give him the white one instead? (if I cant get hold of the green one)
If I started to feed it a couple of times a week with mixer how much should I give?
The stall also sold something called cow heel, is this what it suggests, does anyone feed this?
Sorry lots of waffly questions but I believe tripe is very good for dogs. At the moment Ollie is on nature diet or what we eat if it is suitable, but I would like to have some tripe in his diet if it is as good as people say it is.
Thanks Nicky

Hi nickie, no, the bible tripe is not the black tripe. The bible tripe is brown, thin, sticky, and very "off" looking. There is no point you buying tripe of any description from a butcher, it has all been treated in one way or another. Find a pet shop and ask for green raw tripe. Most decent pet shops sell it or will get it in for you. As a last resort "Pets at Home" sell tripe. Its not the best in the world.but its OK (its not bible tripe) but more expensive than an ordinary pet shop. If you dont mind telling me the area that you live, I may be able to tell you where to go.
If its any help I feed mine on the following ratio.....2lbs meat..1lb biscuit.

Thanks Phillipa
Im off to pet warehouse this afternoon to buy a new lead (just lost his other one on a walk, about the fifth I think !) so I will ask there. I would presume the meat to biscuits ratio isnt a daily feeding amount although Ollie would probably eat it given half the chance !!!!!

I live in sunny Accrington...Lancashire.......unfortunately I dont have much freezer space, so bulk buying isnt really an option..

A friend of mine lives in Accrington. He has a local supplier who delivers small amounts.
Do you want me to email my friends details over?

Thanks Sharon,
Ive just managed to get a smallish bag of free flow from the pet shop so will try that for now (just defrosting some for tea yum yum!). If you could find out your friends supplier for future ref that would be handy.

I will email him to ask if he has the number available.
Good tip about defrosting tripe is let it defrost in a "tupperware" type box. I got a big one from Asda and fill mine with the required amount of tripe the night before for use the following day. This way the house stays smell free until I open the box!

Well, tried the free flow frozen tripe, and believe it or not Ollie didnt appear to enjoy it too much, he ate the biscuits from round it first!!!! (very unusual he normally eats ANYTHING). However he did enjoy the fresh stuff yesterday so I will be getting fresh again.
Sharon if you could find that number it would be appreciated.

Hi again Nicky, Im sure that would be too much for Ollie, but thats what my Wolfies have. Hope you find what you want.
This board really does not like me at the moment - keeps dumping my replies!
If you can find an abbatoir - try yellow pages - then you may be able to get your tripe fresh (does not smell as much as the defrosted minced stuff)

Thanks Christine, I have fed tripe for years, but that is a very interesting page for people new to a tripe feeding routine :D
Hi Philippa, never really lokked at it properly before I posted & then I read it after & very nearly came back & deleted it cos didn`t want to stir up the issue of *feedin* again! But then I thought well, what the heck it`s got some good info so I`ll leave it, glad I did now :) Wish I could get hold of some myself but they use it in some very popular dishes over here & people just love it YUCK!!!!
