Hello again! My GSD is doing great! She now knows two commands. "Sit" and "Down" -- I have adopted clicker training and she REALLY responds to it! I was curious though! She is confusing "Sit" and "Down" and will do either randomly begging for a treat, any tips on how to correct this? :) Thanks!

I would suggest telling her wrong for the position you don't want and click and treat for what you asked for. Not a telling off tone for wrong you are only letting her know she isn't right.

Mine often run the gamut anticipating what you're going to ask for. If he's mastered sit and down, then try for something a little more daring like 'bow', or just the safe one of 'paw'. Even taught mine to 'high five'

I'm really interested in clicker training and have read through some of the old threads on here regarding it. If you have time to go into more detail about how you are getting on with it I would be really grateful. Do you think that its best to start early (my Border Terrier is 14 weeks old) and do you need to adopt one type of training only, so if I go with clicker training use this form of training consistantly.
Thank you

I started clicker training with Harvey when he was 8 weeks old. Just simple and fun stuff. He has a VERY steady sit now - that's all I really teach them using the clicker. Whenever he was a bit unsteady with the sit, I would go back and do a bit of clicker training with him. I do use other methods too. I find it a fun thing to do with my dogs when inside.

Dog will try all sorts to try and get it right, go back to clicking immediatly the pup sits if that is what you have asked for, if it does anything else do nothing just wait for the correct response, but don't repeat the order. No need to treat straight away but be quick with the click. My youngster used to sit up in a beg and roll over backwards which got a laugh but no click because I was asking for a stand, supose I should have turned it into a party trick but did not want to risk him doing it in the show ring. Hi Nahirean, I,m interested in "clicker" training my new staffie. At what age is it best to begin and also where do I get one? Sorry if that sounds like Duh, in a pet shop, because my 2 local ones don,t stock them. Thanks in advance, Deirdre

Hi Deidre,
I've recently started clicker training with Hugo, my eight month old Miniature Schnauzer, who when I got him at six months old had not even been taught any basic commands such as "Sit" etc. Within the first five minutes he did a really good "Sit" and after about fifteen minutes he mastered "Down" and a complete roll-over which was amazing! I must say though that it does help if you have a greedy dog~Hugo would learn to fly if he thought there would be a treat at the end of it!
I got the clicker and "The Clicker Book" by Karen Pryor at Pets At Home.
I'm really not good at formal training, but this was really good fun both for me and for Hugo.
Good luck for when you get started,
Michele
