Topic Dog Boards / General / can you have two male staffordshire bull terriers
- By harvey123 [gb] Date 11.04.08 17:28 UTC
i have one male stafford at the moment (who is 6 months old), i am not considering buying another stafford now but maybe in the future and was wondering if you could keep two males as i wouldent want a female as i have no intention of breeding

I don't have staffies myself but I am sure it is like keeping any other breed of dog (within reason).
I would say yes you could keep two male dogs together, I know lots of people that have two or even more male dogs living in their homes.
I would probably consider neutering one or both of them if you are not planning on breeding, but Then I do know people with 'entire' males living together!! (not much help am I!!)

Put it this way, If I was thinking of having two males in my home I would be prepared for a few possible grumpy moments between the boys, younger one probably trying to dominate the older one and older one putting him in his place, but I would have no worries about them not living side by side together, But I am sure someone with more experience will post soon to make it a bit clearer for you!!

If you have no intention of breeding you could have a bitch and get one or both neutered.

no you cant really have 2 staffs as they tend to fight to see whos boss 2 males are worse but 2 females can be just as bad, i would suggest getting a bitch but getting her spade i have a bitch staff and i dont intend to breed from her so as soon as the time is right i will get her spade.x

I know people with 2 males and they have never had a problem, you just need to be careful and never leave them alone together but then i also know people who have 2 males and they have to be kept apart all the time.

thanks for your responces, so if you keep one male and one female is there limited problems

I have 1 male and 3 females and never had a problem, i prefer mixed sex hoseholds but that is just my opinion, like i said before i do know people to have 2 males and never had problems.

depends upon the owners and the individual dogs/bitches

I would recommend a dog and bitch as the best though
I have 4 at present- 1 male and 3 females
2 females hate each other (though one is a cross breed)- mum and daughter get on brilliantly and male gets on with every female

I don't think i could cope with a scenario of never being able to leave my dogs alone together. I need all of my dogs to get along and be able to be trusted together 100% of the time.

Never had a problem keeping males together but I have with bitches. Males will have a bit of a mumble and forget the next moment and be playing together. Bitches, once they have had a real set to will never forget and their only ambition seems to be to kill one another.

Having said that I do not own Staffies and they may be different because of their ancestry, would take advice from Staffordshire Terrier people and anyway wait till your puppy is fully adult so you can give him the sort of attention and training he may need in his teenage stage.

A lot depends on breed.  some breeds you cannot leave dogs together as if they had a disagreement it would end in injury.  With some others same sex will often enough fall out to lead to caution and separating.  Yet others male dogs will not tolerate another full male.  Some get on fine with their own sex and opposite sex, but more than one Male can be a problem if entire bitches are owned.  Other breeds will get on fine with whatever sex combination.

There are only a few breeds where bitches will not get on, but in all breeds if bitches fall out then it is often a lifelong enmity, but it happens rarely, but with males it is more likely, but often less serious.  they say males fight for breathing rights, but when bitches fight it is for breathing rights :D

You must consider what breed you have and what their original purpose was.

Any breed with fighting or baiting background is likely to be one where caution is advised when keeping multiple dogs.  Even the most mild mannered will not back down once in a fight, though may rarely start or get involved in one.

Other breeds like some with strong guarding traits are naturally more dominant and again if there is a status issue, may be capable of hurting each other as not wanting to back down.

Some breeds are very sociable generally but also canine enough to compete for things that any canine would, bitches, food etc.  A very few breeds just haven't it in them to compete or squabble at all.  Owners are even able to keep several stud dogs with entire bitches without anyone needing to assert themselves.

Then there are of course individual differences between individual dogs, some of which are not breed typical in their behaviour characteristics.

We choose our breeds and adapt according to their needs.

I agree with Ktee, I personally would not keep dogs that I couldn't expect to get on in a group without having to pussy foot around and separate them, but in the same vein I couldn't live with both sexes having to split in season bitches up from males, so I only keep girls, though do have the odd male visitor.

I agree with colls, I wouldn't, a person I know tryed, didn't work had to rehome one after a naste fight.
Even a bitch I would try to see if he would except any companion. Not all dogs get on what ever breed, what ever sex. depends on their personality.

I'd like you to draw up a specific list of breeds you'd say are very easy to get along with others, that might really help those of us who don't know so much about dogs to choose appropriately.

But this is just one trait among many.  Most breeds fall somwhere in the middle get on with most dogs most of the time, and individuals vary.

A breeds history should guive you a godo idea aobut teh sociability, dominance, reactivity, and length fo fuse that will affect how they realate to each other etc.

Then of course how typical the dogs are of their breed will alter things considerably.
