Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / is she isn't she?? puppy movement??

Hi All
My little lady should be 5weeks and either 4 days or 2 days. The last time she had litter i didnt have a scan but just knew she was pregnant as she had a clear mucousy discharge from about 4weeks.

This time i saw a discharge on the 4 week mark but nothing since then and although her teats are looking prominent she is not giving me any other indication that she is pregnant - no change in shape etc. She is little more excited about food but this could still happen with a phantom i presume.

I rang the vet about a scan which can be done tomorrow but as already written on here many times they are not always accurate. Thought i could just wait and see in another week  for more positive signs but the suspense is killing me!!

She has just jumped off the sofa in startled way after being asleep and turning looking at her side and then sniffing her self - could this have been puppy movement that she felt?? after a minute or two she jumped back on the sofa and gone to sleep again!

shall i go for the scan?? or stick with gut instinct and my vibes that say she's not pregnant? (keeping money in my pocket) decisions decisions.

I would go for the scan, they're not that expensive, and you really need to know if at all possible whether or not your bitch is definitely in whelp, otherwise you risk increasing her food when she doesn't need it.

I know some people have bad experiences with scans, but I think a degree of that is down to the experience of the sonographer. Also, I would always have a scan as it's lovely to see the pups if nothing else! :-)

Go for the scan, she may be having a small litter

yeah think i will as i also need to start worming at the weekend and dont want to do this if not needed.

what about her feeling puppies move - would she feel them at this stage?? i know we cant feel puppy movement til around 7-8 weeks but she must do a lot sooner.

well had the scan and instincts were right - no puppies seen.

the vet said he cannot 100% say no but 99% sure, he was very good and tried 3 different probes to get the best views. He did at one point think there were some but this turned out to be a very active bowel moving as he said pups wouldn't move like that (one second it was there then gone, like a wave).

I am diassappointed but it obviously wasnt meant to be this time.

He did tell me to watch her weight as she has gained 35grams in 5weeks!?? not really a significant weight gain to worry about i would have thought and she did have a full bladder when he weighed her (emptied before the scan)

Still keep an eye on her though.  As vet has said the scans don't always prove to be correct.

Yes i have read on here that scans do get it wrong, but because she does not have the mucousy discharge that is a definite sign of pregnancy I am taking the scan as right. If she had the discharge then i would be doubting it.

He did seem to be thorough and took his time.
