Topic Dog Boards / Health / Pyo?

My bitch has just finished her first season since her litter. (Last bits of blood I noticed when wiping her with tissue were last week)

She is absolutely fine in herself, but I have noticed she has some discharge from her vulva when I wiped her with some tissue just now. (I had to wipe her, it wasn't noticeable otherwise) I checked as she is possibly licking herself slightly more than usual. The discharge was slightly opaque and creamy white/very pale yellow rather than bright white. It doesn't smell at all.

No other symptoms.

I suspect I am being totally paranoid and will probably just keep an eye on her.

Thoughts?

Probably just the end of the season, keep checking and if it becomes 'offensive' or she seems unwell, check it out with your vet.

Sounds like the end of the season to me also, rather than a pyo.

Thanks. I am sure you're both right, I am just even more paranoid than usual about it, as her Aunt has not long died after pyo.

Her season seemed to go on for longer this time, which has made me a bti more aware. I'll keep my eye on her (as always) just in case.

I, too, am paranoid about pyometra.  My last four bitches have had it but, thankfully, my being paranoid saved their lives as we caught it in time, you can't be too careful!  It seemed to start about 6 weeks after the season ended......

Thanks, I think it is most common about 6 weeks after the season has finished, from what I have read.

My bitch is onyl young, and kept very fit and active, so technically she shouldn't be high risk for pyo, but obviously in the scheme of things, statistics don't mean that much!

A 15 month old bitch sister to mine has had two seasons and threatened Pyo recently.  She was bought as a foundation bitch, and was from a litter that can't easily be repeated (I took her Mum abroad for mating).

Things are under control after AB's but the Vets advice is to mate her on her next season (about July), which wasn't the plan.

Her owner is having a baby next month and the plan was to breed from her in about 18 months.  This is the better of the two bitches from the litter!  Sods law.

Our breed clubs code of ethics states bitches not to whelp before two.  This is the kind of case where some flexibility and common sense need to be used.
