We are thinking of taking one of our girls over to France to use a lovely dog on her , but we have been told by our vet that even though our girl has had had the rabis jab and got her passport once she leaves the UK she can't return for 6 months from the day of her jab is this right?

Obviously I am not Brainless, but one of my puppy owners has just had her puppy vaccinated for Rabies, as they plan to take her camping in France with them. According to what they have said, she needs a blood test 6 months after the vaccination to check her immunity before they get the all clear to take her.

I am assuming the problems would occur if you travel before having the blood test?

Not Brainless either, but the rule is that a dog cannot re-enter Britain under the Pet Passport scheme until 6 months after the date of the blood test that showed sufficient antibodies. So that's about 7 months from the date of the rabies jab.

Not quite right - the blood test is taken about 4 weeks after the rabies jab (the exact timing varies slightly according to manufacturer) and the Pet Passport is only issued after the test has shown sufficient immunity. The dog can then leave the country but can't return (without going into quarantine) for 6 months after the date the blood was taken.

No she won't be able to return to then UK until 6 months from the date the blood was taken to test for Rabies antibodies, if this test came back positive.  I have just had a bitch who failed the antibody test so will have to have another Rabies shot and another blood test.  As there is no hurry I have opted to wait until a year to have a new Rabies shot, as I don't want her to have too many..

ok lets just say that she had her passport 6 months ago, so the six month period is up can she go out of the uk for a week then back in?

Check the exact date in her passport. She can re-enter the UK 6 months and 1 day after the start date in her passport.
