Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / What signs did you see by 5 weeks?

Hi my girl would be about 5 weeks pregnant by now, I just wondered if you could tell me what signs you have had by this stage?

Her  teats did not enlarge at all whilst in season but over the last few weeks they have enlarged a little and 2 pairs have now gone red. Her tummy seems to be quite firm and a little larger and almost feels like large balls on her under sides (I have not pushed into her tummy just run my hands very softly down her underside whilst standing and looking away from me). She also seems to be resting more.

Do you think she might be pregnant?

Thanks

large balls

sounds like mammaries. hard to tell as she will get them whether pregnant or not. mine had a white dischage about 2 weeks post mating and nausea fo a few days then a clear discharge from about 6 weeks onward. i never felt sure until i felt movement about 6/7 weeks

Many bitches will make a little udder eventually but the nipples nearest the armpits ( often the biggest) start to go bald around the nipple tissue like little bald haloes. A pretty good indication IMO.

i think the 2 between the back legs get biggest. my 2 under armpit nipples are spare and never had milk- the other 8 did

My cockers have normally had sickness by 5 weeks, and started getting fussy with their food, and like others have said normally the hair around the nipples fall out,   I do measure their tummies to keep an eye on things and if they're growing I know, but normally by 5 weeks I know anyway.

Well Carmen's six weeks gone.  She's got very red nipples,  Bulging sides and tummy and she's looking at me very soulfully!!  Bless her, can't wait for the mad dog to come back again, but she is enjoying her tummy tickles.  She's just started with the discharge really and all's looking good at the moment.

By 5 weeks i think the best thing to do is get a scan, takes the guess work out of it, my bitch got morning sickness with both her pregnancys but equally got morning sickness on the two occasions where she was mated but missed (she obviously thought she was pregnant) she also got milk with both her missed matings, so its all a bit of a lottery.

my bitches expressions change.  They have this sorfer looking face, may sound silly but it's something that I pick up on.

My girls normally change too, although my last bitch is so soft and gentle anyway I really just couldn't tell, she kept me guessing until 6 weeks, then suddenly looked pregnant and I felt puppy movement.

The simple answer is all these changes may be indicative of pregnancy, but could equally be signs of a phantom.

I have had bitches show very few signs of pregnancy.  In fact if my Lexi had not been confirmed in whelp I would not have been certain until a week before they were born and even then I thought it might be a litter of one or two.

A casual observer could not tell she was pregnant at all, and if someone had been of a suspicious nature when visiting the pups might have doubted she was the Mum, as she had very little mammary development other than enlarged nipples, but fed a litter of 7 superbly.

If it wasn't for the post partum coat loss I could have shown her (hypothetically) whilst she was nursing and straight after the pups left, though by 8 weeks after whelp she was practically bald :D

Her mother on the other hand for her first litter ballooned early and was obviously in whelp at four weeks yet had a smallish litter of four, but loads of fluid.

I was convinvced my bitch was in whelp when when I took her to be palpated at about 3 weeks. Her teats were noticably enlarged and she had clear discharge from her vulva by then too. She was also more 'serene' if that makes sense? She was also off her food and had been sick a couple of times. Of course, it might just have been wishful thinking on my part!

By 5 weeks, it was getting quite obvious to me, although even at 9 weeks, she didn't look that big and the casual observer may have just thought she was fat. She had 9 pups though.
