Well had my small toy breed bitch ultrasounded yesterday (35 days from first mating/33 days from second). I wasn't allowed to go down to the scanning room with her and when the vet returned he said there were no puppies. I was so convinced she was that I'm totally gutted. What he did say, however, was that they look for fluid areas on the uterus and then look for heartbeats. Although there were a couple of fluidy areas he could detect no heartbeats. Been offered a free scan in a fortnight just to make absolutely sure. When I phoned up my mentor in the breed she said not to give up hope as in her opinion heartbeats would not be detectable yet and the fluidy areas may very well be a couple of puppies. Would be very interested in other people's opinions on this. Negative as well as positive as I just don't know what to think. My girl seems to be showing all the signs (reddish teats, going off food, more cuddly etc)
Hi
I think you'll find if read some other posts about scanning that they are not always correct and go for the next scan as its free! (vets dont normally give you a lot for free i dont think)
My gilr will be 35 days on sunday or 33 from second mating - not going to have her scanned but time will tell. i haven't got the vibes this time as i did with her last time.

Hi, I am new to breeding. I had Poppy scanned last year at 35 days and again 2 weeks later. My vet said exactly the same as yours. I was convinced that she was but unfortunately she went on to have a phantom. This year i was allowed in to see the scan and saw the fluid pockets. They definately had heart beats in them. This week i have been for the second scan and you can see the ribs and pups moving. I was very unsure about by vet last year and convinced that she was wrong! But i have to say that seeng it with my own eyes i can see what she was talking about now! I know other people on here may have other stories to tell. I wanted to know how many pups but i could also see why sometimes its differicult to tell. Poppy last year had all the signs, digging, cuddly and milk come in and weight gain. All you can do is wait another 2 weeks i am afraid to say.

My dog was used on a bitch 17 weeks ago. The owners were told that she wasn't pregnant on the first scan but they were almost sure that she was even though they say she didn't put any weight on. They had her re-scanned 2 weeks later and vet said one, maybe two pups and she had five! Seeing the bitch and pups last week I can't believe that she hadn't put any weight on in the 9 weeks of pregnancy because she definitely has since!
Thanks everyone. I guess I will just have to wait and see and there is a little bit of hope although I'm not going to get excited. One more question. My bitch has 4-4/2 month seasons so if she's not in whelp when should I expect her to come in?

The same as before, if her cycle is every 4.1/2 months then it should be exactly the same, I know my girls are the same after litters as before.
i would change vets if they wont let you in to see the scan! what the hell are you paying for? to see the scan!

My vet always wheels the scanner into the examination room for us to see too!
I definitely won't change vets as they are brilliant in every other way. He did say that if he could see anything then he would come back for me. Maybe if I had seen an empty scan I will be accepting the result more easily. As it is there is that little spark of hope that won't go away.

I used to have a vet who scanned my bitch in front of my eyes and told me that she wasn't pregnant even though I could see fluid sacs. He blithered on about shadow and bladders, gas etc and said there were no puppies. Before the scan he asked what my gut feeling was and I said "Oh she's definately in whelp" but after the scan he gleefully said..."got it wrong this time, havent you?"
Result ......6 bitch pups all over 1lb in weight and NO I didn't pay the bill.
My new vet takes the bitch away because she says ithe scanner is not mobile and is in the op theatre ( where I'm not allowed). Cant complain -she's got it spot on every time including numbers and I get a photo.

I have mine done with a sheep scanner. Recently she scanned one of mine at 27 days and could tell. I must say she is very good and I tell everyone in my area to use her.

I had a bitch who struggled with her first pup so we took her to the vet who gave her a shot of oxitosin to help contract her womb. First pup was born dead, second was a dog
who was fine, third was a bitch who was also fine the vet then went on to scan her, which we seen and told us that was her finished. We took her home and settled her and her two pups in the whelping box which was in my bedroom, two hours later we heard her start to push we put the light on just as she had another wee boy!!!!! So ultrasounds can be wrong even at nine weeks and in labour.
