Topic Other Boards / Foo / Decking Oil ??
- By bailliesmum [gb] Date 02.04.08 19:48 UTC
Hi, we had our back garden landscaped two summers ago now,
and the decking is really in need of treatment this year.
Been having a look around Homebase etc and the proper decking oil is extortionate ..
I've got roughly 40m2 to do .. Has anyone used anything else to treat their decks?
I've heard you can use teak oil or linseed oil, this would obviously work out
a lot cheaper .. But would I be scrimping in the long run ... Has anyone any bright,
money saving ideas :)

I used decking stuff and it was rubbish.  It comes off if you put furniture on it although it may have been because my decking was rubbish.  I've since had it ripped up (well I fell through it to be fair ;)  and put down slabs.  I think my money saving over the years was to ditch decking for a one-off payment for slabs.

I always use a product called Liberon Decking Oil-I am biased I work for them! It is cheaper than the big brands but you cannot get it in B&Q, Homebase etc. Linseed Oil is not great on Decks, Teak Oil is but works out more expensive than Decking Oil and doesn't have any UV filter to stop deterioration. 2.5 litres of our Deking Oil should be about £18.
hth,
Jeff.

Focus diy  sell a 5ltr can of decking oil for £22.99
made by cuprinol which has a 5 year guarantee.
( more biased because i work at focus) cheaper than 18 quid for half the amount
hope this helps

:-D  I think it is a dog thing. When we had our decking down the company that did it advised us on the product to use, which was supposed to be very good.

But I have between 8-10 dogs running around my garden and on my decking most days so it all eventually came off, I just re-do it every now and again, personally unless Jeff's product (willing to give it a go :-) ) is any different I think dogs will always take off the stain eventually, that is unless you ban them from the decking area. :-D

I have western cedar (so it doesn't have any stain/varnish on it) and have found the Owatrol stuff is great. I use Seasonite to treat and the Net-trol to clean the wood if it's in bad shape. The Net-Trol is great; really brings up any algae without damaging the wood. You can buy it from marine supply stores. It may still be too expensive for you but it is good stuff.

Credit where it's due, this stuff is good as well.
