Can someone give me an idea of what to expect to pay. Have been googlin and there is such a variation in price.
- By Polo Date 29.03.08 09:28 UTC Edited 29.03.08 09:30 UTC
I think probably 650 to 850 pounds. Wouldn't pay more than 850 really. Out of interest which colours are your favourites? Which lines do you like? I love to chat about poodles! :-) edit. heh :-) assuming your not researching for somebody else

Be very careful of any pups being sold for less than about £500.  Puppies bred well with health testing for parents, and the best start in life do cost a fair bit to rear and there is an acceptable price range within reputable breed circles of which the breed clubs can advise you.

If you search for breed clubs on this site, or check under the breed standard on the kennel club website you will find the breed club contact details.

Pups priced low are likely to be bred by complete novices breeding from their pet (or worse even puppy farmers, but these tend to charge more).  The problem with buying a pup from someone who has not studied and has a deep interest and knowledge of the breed is that pairings will b e made on the grounds of availability or sentiment, and not because the two parents and their ancestors complement each other in terms of good qualities (health temperament and physical attributes).

Here's a good poodle site for all varieties http://www.napoleon.org.uk/

Unfortunately I can't find any breed club links on that site.

I have a question for standard poodle owners.

The standard is over 15 inches tall, but in reality what height range are most standards?  Most I have seen are way taller than my own breed (about 20 inches).  so in reality what height would you expect a standard to be?

I have a friend who would like a medium size poodle, certainly taller than 15 inches but not as tall as most we have seen at shows which seem to be more like 24 or more.

Seems strange to me to have 3 sizes and in Europe four yet the 3 smaller sizes are all still small dogs, and then you have such a  huge potential size range for the standards.

I see the FCI standard calls for large poodle to be 18 to 24 inches (45 TO 60cm).

Its my daughter really (grown up one) and it will be her first dog although we did own one some years ago. She has set her heart on a black bitch but there are so many websites out there its going to take a lot of research to find right one I think

Hi I have 2 dark apricot toy poodles both male one of which I bought for 600 pounds in January 2005 and the other one I paid 750 pounds for in August 2006, They are related(Uncle and Nephew) And I bought them both from the same breeder whom I found on the Kennel Club website. I went to a reputable breeder who also shows at Crufts as the poodle I had before which my mum and dad bought from an advert in the local paper suffered with ulcerative collitis all his life and was often at the vets. I have had my current 2 poodles from puppies. Hope this helps.

Thanks
I heard from a breeder quoting £850 and have just spoken to another who is planning a litter saying maybe 700. I have gundogs myself so interesting to see difference in price.
- By ttaylor45 [gb] Date 29.03.08 15:00 UTC
I forgot to say why there was such a difference in price between my 2 poodles, the breeder just said she had put her prices up in the 18 months between buying my first poodle and the second one
they are both equally as well bred as each other. The only problem with this breeder is that she does not seem to be as keen to sell the bitches to you at least in my case she would'nt although I was not that bothered either way it was just people seemed to advise having one of each, I also was only shown the one puppy but he has proved to be a very loving little dog and gets on absolutely fine with the older one.

Hi. Brainless a lady local to me has a 20 inch bitch, but any smaller than that and a standard is unlikely to do well in the show ring. Same lady also has a 28 inch dog, he's like a pony LOL . Well star hope your daughter gets a brilliant little girlie. Polo's my first dog and I'm so glad I got him, poodles are so fantastic! :-) Maybe she could visit some shows and talk to the breeders of any dogs that catch her eye there?

In Response to Star

Just make sure you check out the breeder with the breed clubs for their standing in breed circles.  A slick website can still belong to a puppy farmer/commercial producer.

Once you have your breeder you can always google the kennel name (affix) and some interesting stats would come up like show results.  I would be surprised not to get some show results if the breeder is established, as I would expect at least some of a breeders stock to be shown, otherwise they are breeding purely for the puppy market.

Then I think the FCI standard fro Standards is more helpful as it at least says 18 to 24 inches with an allowance of 2cm over the top height giving you just uncder 25 as a maximum.

To be honest I personally think about 20 to 22 a nice height, but seems hard to know how to find dogs sof a medium height in a breed with such an allowable size range.

Brainless; well I rather like the standards in the 23 -26 inch range . Polo's dad is about 23 inches and is considered small.  Polo's measured up at 25 inches to the shoulder, and I'm pleased with that. Standard Poodles were smaller originally (the british ones, anyway). I agree 20 -22 inches is nice, when we first were looking at standards we wanted a dog that size. The 20 inch bitch near is gorgeous, she's done well in the ring, won p-g classes  and always placed, so smaller dogs do fine in the ring too, its just a 'trend' towards larger dogs maybe. Sorry to go Off Topic Star. Maybe you could update us when your daughter has her bundle of curls :-) edit. actually if there were some consistently smaller standards about, I might choose one instead of a miniature
- By Brainless [gb] Date 30.03.08 09:55 UTC
That is what I was trying to say as a miniature is too small for a medium size really.

Look on this poodle website.  The majority of breeders here are show breeders.
