- By dobelover [gb] Date 30.03.08 14:14 UTC
Hello everyone

Jet has been having watery No2s since the early hours of Friday morning ( 28th March).... I gave him a small portion of cooked white fish friday morning just in case it was a one off..... he had the runs again friday lunch time so I starved him for 24 hours.... .....no runs so I then gave him white fish only....he was so hungary......still no runs.... so about 6 hrs later gave him some more fish ....  he gulped it down...... then all hell broken loose... he had the runs......and more runs....it been spurting from him as he barked or walked..... I'm not sure if I need the vet yet??? believe me I'm the first to call....

As of 3pm today he has had no food for another 11 hours.....he's unsettled... obviously extemely hungry....

Jet is nearly 14..... :-)

What can I give him to eat??? chicken is no good for him...that's why he's on fish..

How long should you starve them before trying food again??

Luckily he's drinking well so he's not dehydrated. :-)

Help.......

boiled white rice?? I would say boiled chicken but you say no chicken...hmmm

some people swear by mashed potatoe (no milk or butter) with fish, but it looks like fish is no-go

scrambled or hard boiled egg??

you might have to consider trip to vet

fingers crossed

If I was you I'd be calling the vets.  Don't want to worry you, but something sounds amiss if he's had the  runs after a small amount of white fish.

but do please consider vets, continuous runs are not nice, and it's not just water he'll be losing, but essential vitamins and minerals too.

not sure if anything with electolytes would be beneficial??? Am sure someone on here will know

if he sometimes gets funny tums like this then you will know better how he is, and just an appt in the morning may suffice ;)

re eggs - I've heard they are binding, but have never had to test it out, mine like the occasional boiled egg as a treat

Hi,
on occasion when a dog doesnt seem to be able to hold much food in it is good to boil up some cabbage.  Keep the cabbage and water its boiled in until it cools. ln a separate pot boil white rice until its really soft and mushy, then strain the rice and add to the cabbage water.
Feed this through out the day, say every couple of hours. lt tends to soothe the stomach and cabbage water is great for the runs.
This is great for all dogs but go easy on any dog with suspected thyroid problems.
Also slippery elm powder/ tree barks powder is excellent for the runs and l would never be without it.

I have never heard of that Barghest, thanks for that, will file it away for future reference ;)

Hi DEARLADY,
yes its really great, its a really old folk remedy and l think it also replaces electolytes.
lve used it several times over the years and its so gentle on the stomach and it really does help even the most severe cases, often where a vet will give antibiotics , even steroids , l have found this far safer and effective.
l was also thinking maybe dobelovers dog could have a slight infection, colloidal silver or garlic and fenugreek tablets might help.

Hello Barghest...

Thx for your adivce... I'm willing to try anything to help him...

Dearlady... I will deffinately call the vets out if needed...  he does suffer from time to time...:-(... it's just that he's an old boy now and you worry even more.....

Jet is my whole life...

Hi Dobelover,
try the cabbage water and see how he goes, l had an old dog that was prone to colitis and the cabbage worked great.
lf your poor old chap gets the runs every so often it would be great to get slippery elm or tree barks powder, it soothes the gut and bowell and firms the stools, is easy to digest and very nutricious and works every time.
You can get it from Dorwest herbs, or most holistic pet websites.
Goodluck.
