Hi all

I have a 2 yr old ****** who when in season jumped a 6ft fence to get out she was missing about an hour before we found her I dont know if she came across any male dogs while she was out but yeah I guess it is a possibility how would I know if she was pregant I didnt think was was up until recently as I hadnt seen her tie with any dog she is getting a bit podgy (she eats for wales lol and always has) just wondered if there were any tell tale signs i should be looking out for she would be about 4 to 5 weeks now if she did tie with a male
Will however take her to the vets after the easter holidays to get her checked over but was just wondering if anyone could help me out

many thanks

i was told they get a clear mucousy discharge if they are pregnant from about 4 weeks.

I'm sure someone else will give advice soon

Sorry didn`t need full post ,at four to five weeks there is not many outward signs best to get her checked out by vet.My girls go off their food for a little while at this stage and they are more clingy .

Truth is all bitches are different, some show, some don't, some get a little sick, some don't, some have teats that will change shape and size and some don't. Some will have appetite increases, some decreases. There just aren't any real signs, sometimes it may even be a phantom pregnancy too.

The only way to know for sure is to have your vet palp or scan your bitch, she can have an injection to take any pups away for many weeks to come yet if you wish, so you don't need to panic if she does show up to be in whelp.

Unless you know someone very experienced who will palp your bitch then your vet is the only one who can say for definite. :-)

My girl is hopefully five weeks gone tomorrow.  She has small, hard, red teets and a little bloated looking belly.  She has changes from an absolutely mental dog who wouldn't sit still to a dog who now sits by my side most of the day.

Still don't know whether she is but signs are looking good.
- By mistyrose1703 [gb] Date 23.03.08 18:49 UTC
well she has gone quieter she was a mental dog runs around and would chew anything but all stopped.  She has broadened across her back and her teats are larger than what I would say were normal .  she has  got rounder so dont know will take her to the vets this week to get her checked over

thanks everyone for your coments much appreciated

Long before my bitches have a round tum, I look down on them at the ribcage.  It's the first part that widens, don't know if others find the same.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 23.03.08 23:41 UTC
I had this situation with a  bitch and had a mismate jab regardless.

There is a product called Alizin that can be administered to cause a pregnancy to be aborted up to 42 days after mating.

At this stage it should b  fairly easy for a competent Vet to scan and confirm pregnancy and the bitch can have the injection if needed for future breeding or could still be spayed.

Alternatively the whelps can be Put to sleep at Birth, leaving the bitch with say two to rear to assuage maternal instincts.  It should e far easier to find the best  homes for two crossbred pups than a large litter.

I would have to have the mismate jab the thought of putting the pups to sleep at birth is horrific but can understand why.

well she would be at least 5 weeks now and if she is will let her go till she has them I have enough family around me that are willing to have a pup so homeing them shouldnt be a problem she has a lovely temperament and to be honest I couldnt have the pups put to sleep at birth so we will see what the vet has to say when i take her there I will keep you all informed of my decision and the outcome .  My vet has also stated on the phone that he wont give the mismate injection unless I saw them tie which to be honest I didnt it is only as she is putting on weight and her teats are slightly larger than i would have thought would be normal for her

many thanks for your help
- By LindaMorgan [gb] Date 24.03.08 13:48 UTC
my vet didn't question whether they had tied or not as there was a good possibility.

well all
I took gypsy to the vet this morning they scanned her and said as there wernt any puppies around the bladder  that she wasnt pregnant and to come back in 2 weeks so she can make sure as she was  unsure as at 5 weeks they could be there but undetectable ?.  She also said that she could possible be having a phantom pregnancy but at 5 weeks it should be subsiding by now.  Will say she totally confused me and I am still no further ahead as to knowing if she is in pup or not. I asked if there was any medication for a phantom pregnancy and she said there was but she would not prescirbe them as she wasnt sure as to if gypsy was pregnant or not and to bring her back in 2 weeks.

Do the puppies form around the bladder as she has stated.  I thought they could be anywhere to be honest but we live and learn
- By Brainless [gb] Date 27.03.08 17:07 UTC
Well with my girls they have had to look up much higher, they locate e the bladder and work upward, mien have always been high in the ribs
- By mistyrose1703 [gb] Date 27.03.08 17:10 UTC
thanks for the reply.  I will say that when you place your hand on her stomache just under her ribs you can sometimes feel a flicker (feels like somebody flicking your hand) maybe wishfull thinking but who knows I have to back on the 8th April for another scan and to be honest the vet I saw didnt seem to know what she was doing didnt even examine her before hand

> you can sometimes feel a flicker (feels like somebody flicking your hand) maybe wishfull thinking but who knows

Sorry if this sounds stupid, but are you hoping she is pregnant?  Didn't she get out while in season, so you have no way of knowing who or if there is a sire?
- By mistyrose1703 [gb] Date 27.03.08 17:33 UTC
well to be honest if she was now I wouldnt have them aborted or anything I have homes for them already if she is so it doesnt really matter and I guess when you think for about 2 maybe 3 weeks that she is you do get excited about the prospect of having puppies around.  I have got a male lab here aswell and he was kept away from her but he may or even maynot have got to her as I was out of the house for about 10 days into her season and my son was looking after them I kept them apart but I have recently found out that he housed them overnight together :S

she did however jump the fence and as I have also stated she was away from the house for an hour before we  found her.  Whatever the puppies are we we love them no matter what and they will have really good homes which is the most important thing

phantom subsiding at 5 weeks post mating!!!!!????????  which vet told you that? my bitch doesnt start her phantom until 8 weeks post season and we have digging/milk for at least 4 weeks sometimes longer (until we used gallostop) i would change vets if they are giving out that advise
- By mistyrose1703 [gb] Date 27.03.08 17:56 UTC
Hi Sarah it was a vet in cardiff.

I wasnt to impressed with her myself to be honest as she didnt really examine her she just went straight to the scanner looked around near her bladder and said no she isnt but then added that I would have to come back in 2  weeks to make sure as she didnt know could be the puppies arent showing as of yet I have another appointment with another vet now on the 8th April just to make sure
so they start phantom pregnancies straight after a season or a few weeks after?

- By LindyLou [gb] Date 27.03.08 18:43 UTC
My bitch has started to show signs of a phantom in the last week. She would now be 8 weeks gone if she had been mated. Bitches tend to show the phantom, just before giving 'birth' to her puppies ;-) They start the digging and produce milk about a week or so before hand and it can last a few weeks. I think I would be changing my vet if he told me what you were told  Seska didn't dig when she had a litter until she was actually in labour, so I know she isn't pregnant, just pretending :-D

Edited to add: the only way you can be 100% sure is to have her x-rayed. Once the skeleton has been formed it would show up.

Hi mistyrose
Back in the 1970's when I bred my first litter, I took my Toy Poodle bitch to have a check over 2 weeks before she was due.  This was a planned litter.  The vet who examined her said "she's overweight, take her home and starve her!"  Yes, I did change my vet, and I've been with the same surgery ever since!  She went into labour 10 days after I was told that she wasn't pregnant!   I had (in my wisdom), decided to keep a bitch out of the litter.  Yeah right!  She had one pup, a boy, and I kept him!

HI all

I rang my vets today as I was a bit concerned over the fact that my dog was following gypsy around all the time and attaching his nose to her rear end seemed a bit strange to me. One of the nurses answered the phone I explained I had been there previously and she checked her records came back on the phone and asked me if her mamory glands had started to enlarge as they wernt previously . I then told her they were large when I brought her into the surgery and explained what the vet had said to me and on asking me who the vet was she said it was her last day there the day I had been in and maybe she hadnt checked properly  . she also said that on the records it stated that if her mamory glands did start to enlarge to take her back before the 2 weeks were up, She never told me that at all all she said was to bring her back in 2 weeks and they would rescan her. She asked me then to make another appointment to see another vet but there would still be a charge to look her over and rescan her even though it wasnt done properly the first time.
She did however tell my that it was normal for the dog to react in that way as it was a scent they gave off while pregant phantom or not.

So as you can imagine my faith in that vet has now gone and I will be definately changing my vets

That is terrible, te vets should have put ot right there and then mine would have.

Hi all

just thought I would update you all.

I took gypsy to the vet again today for another scan and she said she is 99 percent sure it is a phantom.  She only scanned around the bladder area again. When I asked could the puppies be hiding anywhere else I was told that if she was in pup then the puppies would be around the bladder and as there were no pups there then she wasnt and it was a phantom  so only time will tell really.

I did ask how long a phantom last and she has said it should be coming to an end now as she has been like it for about 4 weeks and they usually only last that long .  The thing is she has been like it quite a bit longer than 4 weeks now so time will tell

- By sara1bee [gb] Date 08.04.08 20:39 UTC
my bitches phantom lasts for ages- far longer than when she was feeding real pups!
- By mistyrose1703 [gb] Date 09.04.08 10:40 UTC
well this seems to be going on forever to be honest so we will just have to wait and see she said there was no treatment for it as it will go away on its own
